I want to check out XOOPS using PHP 5, so I just installed Xampp on a laptop running WinXP Home Edition.

My problem is, the package comes with MySQL 4.1.11. When I went to set up a new DB and import a SQL file, I found PHPMyAdmin presented me with options for language, character set and collation. I did some research, but I confess the technical explanation of these options is beyond me.

Anyone got a dummy's guide to setting these options in order to import a MySQL 3.32 dump into MySQL 4.1 properly? Or do I just leave them alone?

BTW, the Xampp set up was very quick. Double-clicked the installer and it all worked (very rare!).

phpMyAdmin uses Latin for it's backups, so when you restore you have to specify latin1 as the restore type, not UTF which it (MySQL) will default to.
