After installing modules that appear to have what I'm looking for like AMS and, Zmagazine, contendo, I'd like to cut to the chase and ask someone here to make a suggestion.

All I want is a block that I can place formatted text into. I don't want menus, most popular articls, top articles, or any of that stuff. All I want is a block I can place where I wish that contains wysiswyg edited text.

Is there anything like that?

You can try going to system > blocks and near the end of the page you can create your own block with any text you want, remember to make visible the block and give permissions to the groups you want.
