Is it legal to use XOOPS CMS to run a commercial site?

Is it legal to use XOOPS CMS to run a commercial site?

Can the copy right at the bottom page be removed since the copy right does not apply to the data contents on the page?

Would it still be all right to have "Powered by XOOPS" as the foot note instead of Copy right etc...?

You can do with your website whatever you want. Credits in the code must remain, but you control the visual side of the site completely. You are not required to have any visible "powered by" or copyright notices other than those you want to have.

(On that subject btw - is there anyway of donating by cheque?)

We've had some donations by cheques already, but all went via PayPal. You can also donate directly to our bank accounts, if you want.

Wow XOOPS is great, i'm so glad i came across it, because of the theme though i have about 4 copyright notices! Thanks for telling me whether i can remove a couple of not!

Ah, there's a catch there. Themes can be subject to copyright notices, as they can contain creative works such as images. The HTML is open, but use of the images may be subject to added clauses such as a copyright notice...
