Getting news items onto the front page

I have scoured everything from my blocks to my modules looking for a way to have posted news items appear on the front page. I always check the box that says "Publish in Home" and it does nothing. I need help!

Admin > System Admin > Preferences > General Settings > Set Module for Your Start Page = News
