AFAIK - xhelp doesn't need any php setting / extension that isn't also required by xoops.

However, the fact that you do not get any php debugging info on the Win/IIS machine leads me to ask this question:

Is Zlib compression enabled on your website? How to tell:

1. Is "Use gzip compression?" set to yes in System -> Preferences -> General Settings?
2. Or Is the PHP setting "zlib.output_compression" enabled in phpinfo?

If so, try disabling them and accessing the page again. I remember running into a similar problem using IE, but it was for my entire XOOPS site, not just for xhelp, so I didn't persue it any further.

1) gzip compression in XOOPS is disabled

2) phpinfo shows following parameters about zlib:
ZLib Support enabled
Compiled Version 1.1.4
Linked Version 1.1.4

Directive Local Value Master Value
zlib.output_compression Off Off
zlib.output_compression_level -1 -1
zlib.output_handler no value no value

did you find anything in the windows event log for the IIS or W3CSV processes that might give further clues?

right now i

- cleared ALL event logs on the server
- logged in to my intranet
- tried to start xhelp (blank page)
- checked event log

there are absolutely no entrys in the event log of w2k server! n.o.t.h.i.n.g. aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhhh

how to solve a problem with no error report?

i'll try to install it on another server. but there i have to prepare iis, php, MySQL first. but if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I'm grasping at straws here, but what browser are you using? If it is IE, can you try accessing the site using Firefox or Opera to see if that makes any difference? That should be easier than setting up a whole new server.
My theory is that you are not getting any error messages because according to IIS/PHP the page is being delivered fine (you could check the IIS access log to verify this). If the site does work in another browser, try clearing your IE cache.

@ackbarr:

i've given up trying to find and correct missconfiguration of iis.

i did a fresh installation on another w2k3 server with iis6, php4.3.9 and MySQL 5.0.0-alpha-nt, and all is running well at this time.

thank you for your assistance, but i will not try further to find the failure which i suppose in my other iis machine.
