I've seen the Multilanguages Hack Module by Marcan. But I'm uncomfortable installing a module like this that doesn't have the full support of the XOOPS core team. I'm also concerned with the fact it appears to alter some of the main XOOPS core files.

I'm wondering if the XOOPS team is planning on incorporating multi-language support in an upcoming XOOPS release. I run a website where I have folks from all around the world, and I'd like to at least be able to translate the built in menus and such to their language. Are there plans to impliment some kind of true multi-language support soon?

It is not a module - it is a hack.

It is not supported by the core team because it replaces core files. We (in the core development team) are trying to figure out a good way to implement multi-languages, but agree on the fact that Marcan's hack is - however well it is working - not a production-ready approach and will need to be refined before inclusion in the XOOPS core.
Can't give any timeline, though.

On a related note, I do use the ML hack myself, but I don't think I would on a site with a lot of changing content.

Real multi-language site is not possible without using character sets like utf8 that support multi-byte characters. We might be releasing a core package with utf8 as default charset but that IMHO we should wait until MySQL 4.1.x.

using UTF-8 is the best way to display multilingual content simultaneously.
However, for Chinese language users, UTF-8, at this stage is not the proper way to go if they would switch between S<->T.

It's good to know you guys on the core team are thinking about multi-language support. I'll just wait till it's ready then.
