When you get a module that has several languages ie "english" and "french" and french is the default language. How do you switch it from french to english?

I don't need to change the language for the entire site, all I want to do is make it so this particular module defaults to the english language file instead of the french language file. I am assuming that there is a php page that I can edit to make it call the english folder instead of the french folder. The module that I am currently trying is the new "smartpartners" module tha has been released on dev forge. It defaults to French but included is an english file. I just want to switch it over.
