i've been looking through lots of themes recently and would like to design my own. what i'm wondering is if anyone can recommend a good starting point for this. possible a real basic theme for editing? or a reference for building one? thanks.

Use the default theme as learning and read some documents.

There are a few guides out now, but I just started by taking a theme and editing the CSS and HTML in a decent text editor and seeing what effect it had on the display. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to read up a bit about CSS/HTML first if it is totally foriegn to you.

i'm fine with html and css, but just unfamiliar with how these themes are put together.

i'd like to design it first, then specify where i want things to go. is there a list of commands for pulling in content and menues? other specifics related only to xoops? i.e. a php command for specifying where you want the "main menu" and other things to go? are these covered somewhere? links?

thanks.

Since you are familiar with html and css, you've got half the battle behind you. I'd recommend you grab several themes that interest you and study them.

The default, one of the 7danas and the UC Berkeley are good as they have different approaches.

See what they did, what you like, whether you can replicate some of their features. Move the blocks around. Try to make them fixed and non-fixed width. See what elements are common to them all.

Have fun!

try the anatomy of the default theme at the XOOPS documentation site.

or
the xoops wiki

or
xoops for dummies

They're all good resources.
