all was the same. i just used FTP to upload everything into the same subdirs

If you are planning to stay with the same host for a while, you will avoid a lot of headaches by mirroring the PHP and MySQL versions on your localhost. I would make sure the safe mode and register_globals settings match and that the same PHP extensions are loaded (iconv, exif, etc., etc.).
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.

Check also all the measures to take for transferring your XOOPS site to a new domain, as eg clearing caches, session table, adapting mainfile, looking up old domain names in files and db, etc.
