I have published the 2.0.5 version of this hack Here

Please let me know if there are any problems.

I haven't integrated changes for 2.0.5.1 yet. Based on a review of the changes, there won't be any, but I haven't taken the time to run a diff yet.

Thanks. If there is anything that I can do to help, let me know. I will be very happy to stop maintaining this hack with each release.

Just remember to document that there are potential performance considerations when the

is used. The sql used some outer joins, and for sites with large forums and many groups, this could be problematic.

Thank you so much, regen_r8! I'm going to try it out! I'll report back if it works correctly with version 2.05.1.

Thanks, regen_r8!

I'll try it, too, and report back if any problems.

Re: Problem with private forums being seen by anonymous and registered users!

I encounted errors on version 2.05.1. The first error was that clicking on the forums link in main menu brought up a page that said error accessing page and then redirected me back to the front page. Since the private forums hack was supposed to be only for the private forums, then why was it not allowing any access to the public forums either? Maybe this is just because it won't work with 2.0.5.1?

Then I realized that I had to manually add users to the private forums group table in sql through my phpmyadmin. I added myself to one of my private forums and used the forum menu block that was part of this hack to get to that private forum that I was added to. When I first clicked on that forum, it brought up a successful access granted page, then the same error page as before showed up right after and redirected me back to the front page.

Why would users of a group have to be added manually in the database for the private forums? Is it because you have to reinstall the newBB module first? You can't just upgrade?

To clarify where I was adding myself to the private forum for access to it, I was adding myself with my group id into the table that you said in your hack.html to manually create through my phpadmin.

The code changes involved in this module include extensive mods to the SQL as well as the php code. You can upgrade in place but at the minimum you need to "update" the module.

The uninstall and install simply facilitates the creation of the new table (update does not do that).

There are edit private form form changes and new module preferences. I will look at 2.0.5.1 tomorrow and see what needs touched.

Donna,

I hope that you were not working on your live site. I went there this morning and had a good time reading through some of the posts and weblogs. Really a neat site.

Thanks Rich! No I was doing it on my magazine site but I backed up everything completely before doing it, so I was able to replace all the files I replaced with your hack with my back up copies.

I did do the update forum module in module admin. I don't mind the part about having to add the groups manually into MySQL I just don't know why I got an error accessing module page when I tried to view all forums (should have been able to see at least the public ones) and after I even added a group that could access one of the private forums, into the table bb_forum_group_access.

seems odd to me as well. I looked at 2.0.5.1 - the only file in newbb mod that is touched is the /include/forumforminc.php - this file is not part of the hack so it should work without fail.

were you able to get the preferences and the edit private forums forms to work in the admin interface??
