I have sent a message to GPboarder with my previous message here to see if that is agreeable.

Will start updating this week after talking with GPboarder. I am looking forward to being able to give something to the XOOPS community.

Hi Mamba and thanks for the reply. From the document group on google I see GPboarder is updating the user manual. I wonder if it makes sense for me to work in parallel with GPboarder and update the wiki as the user manual is updated. I will interact with GPboarder on the google group or via message.

Because I am a beginning user (and I think GPboarder is fairly new too) I would like regular access to an experienced user who is willing and not already overloaded. This is so I can ask questions that are needed to update the documents.

Thanks Mamba,
Hakim

I was looking at recent edits in the wiki and came across this gem as the latest edit:

QUOTE

Yet another dead end in XOOPS documentation... save yourselves headaches and join a proper project like Drupal!

ENDQUOTE

Looked at the other edit by this user:

QUOTE

another empty link in a fairly cryptic docs site... it would be nice to be able to find things on this site.. its a mess.

ENDQUOTE

Would someone please answer one of my three messages (one to an individual, one here and one on sourceforge) asking to contribute to the the document team. The documentation is a mess and I would like to help sort it out. I also don't want to step on anyone's toes or duplicate work already being done.

It seems to me that what is on this site is the public face of XOOPS and it needs to be as current and complete as possible.

Hi Document team,

Below is an extended copy of my application to join the Google group. Hope I can be useful to the team.

Hi from Hakim in Au, a new user of XOOPS but competent in English and with some training in editing. Have spoken to Mambo re joining the document group and would like to actively participate.

Would probably like to start on the wiki, the first place I went looking for help with installation. I notice it hasn't been updated since Jan 2008.

Looking forward to 'meeting' and working with you all.
Hakim

I am up and running! Thank you guys.

Now to have another go at installing modules ...

Who do I talk to about the documentation group?

Many thanks,
Hakim

I will put the contents of htdocs in public_html. Is that what I need to do?

At the moment no one knows of the website.

Thought I'd better add that I did have a working installation before this fiasco, started by me installing an incompatible module and then deleting the template files from the sql database.

I downloaded a new copy of the installation files from sourceforge. At the very bottom of a long list of files is a funny place to have the core installation files!

Now my understanding is that only the contents of HTDOCS needs to be in the public_html/hustings directory (the XOOPS root) and the protector file replaces mainfile.dist.php after installation is complete. Xoops_data and XOOPS library are copied to a level higher than public_html before installation and those directories and subdirectories are changed to 0777, as is mainfile.php. Is this correct?

Checksum says there are 3295 files.

How do I get XOOPS to load as soon as someone accesses public_html?

Thanks for your patience guy (and gals?). Once I am up and running, I am more than happy to join your documentation team. I don't know much about XOOPS yet (I don't think I needed to say that!) but can certainly write reasonable English and can edit competently.

No. Failed again after all the changes listed above. Though this time I get a very primitive menu and a message 'module not found'. I notice during the installation process that mainfile.php has its permissions changed to 0444.
After the upload of original files, there is no xoops_version.php in the hustings directory. A search found 22 of them in various directories and I copied the largest and most recent of them from the module/system directory to hustings. Is this the right file?

I am going to go back to the drawing board and download another installation file and see if that makes any difference.

Finally abandoned my attempt to restore an installation I stuffed up. Deleted everything including sql database and created another.

Created a directory called 'hustings', uploaded htdocs from the downloaded XOOPS package as well as the protector file.

Almost through the installation - up to installing standard modules (I think) pressed continue and program exited with error messages saying cannot find absolute path/hustings/install/list_of_files

Restarting results in a 500 internal server error. Nothing in the error log related to todays installation attempt.

A check with cpanel showed no install directory - it had been renamed to install_delete ...

Any clues?

Hakim (he who shoots himself in the foot daily)
