I'm getting a big, red error message in admin area saying that I should change permission on mainfile.php to 444.

That can't be right? If it's 444 I can't delete or update it in ftp, can I? It's 644 now, and that should be safe enough, I think... So how do I get rid of the annoying error message?

Yepp, it works! Perfect!!!

I knew it could be done, but I was thinking the other way around and I came out in the wrong place. But this is very nice!

Thanks!

Thanks! I'll try the module to see what it can do.

This makes me feel stupid! I know that I have all the information needed and still I can't put it together right. The "storytopic=4" should be a pretty good indicator to work with, for one... Well, I'm new to Xoops, Smarty and all the rest and I'm not a programmer. I know that I have to give it time and effort, but it looks simple and I should be able to make it work.

The PHP programming is a bit steep for me and I get confused by all the twists and turns in this brilliant software. I like it and I hate it and I find it very hard to access the right kind of information.

Any ideas on the custom PHP help that you mentioned??? I have all the information right at hand and it's just a question of putting the right code in the right place (like always). I just have to figure out HOW and WHERE.

Any suggetions are appreciated, because I can't accept the idea of this being impossible

It seems that I can't make this work...

I looked for the module, but my Japanese is terrible and the links are obsolete, I think. But a module would be great if I could find one, - it makes upgrade easier and it's a pretty clean way to keep track of changes. But I had to give up on that one. (Why are there so many broken links in XOOPS repository and support forums? Have you been hacked or something?)

Well, I realized that I don't really need to access a whole new theme. All I need is another css-file, or maybe I can do with just a different background. It seemed like such a simple task... But none of the suggestions I have found in here cover my need.

All I want to do is to use the News module and change css on different categories... Not a change on modules and not on every single page, but on the whole category (there will be authors without access to the scripts writing to different categories). But how can I embed the code and WHERE can I put it? I have tried lots of different ways and places, but nothing works.

So maybe News isn't the right tool to use here? I don't know, but I would certainly be willing to try another solution if it had the capability to change the appearance depending on content. I like Xoops, I like Smarty and I love the myAlbum module, but the possibilities seem very limited right now...

I see that there is a theme changer for users, so I guess that the function is embedded somewhere...

How can I submit 1 theme for one category and another for the next, but not as a choice for the user? Is there an option in the menu somewhere?

Thanks! I've been trying to find a way to work around it by checking for modules or hacks to let editors edit from the front end, but I didn't have any luck...

The thing is that I have a few editors who are very afraid of "technical stuff" and they easily get confused. And that is not a good thing! They would rather not open the admin section at all if they can avoid it. They are terrified of doing something wrong in there, and honestly: I'm terrified too. It seems to be very difficult to limit their access to only useful actions.

They should have been able to edit/delete other people's articles in News, delete old files from WF Downloads (huge tiff-files) and myAlbum, add and edit categories, but they shouldn't be able to touch other functions.

The system module is very nice, - it shows only the "Find users", "Mail users" and "Edit user" as I intended. But with WF-Downloads it seems to be all or nothing, and it's the same with myAlbum. Or maybe I have defined the permissions wrong? I don't think so, but I might have... So I guess for now I'll have to keep the editors away from the admin section, because it's too complicated for them at this stage. Maybe later, when they have learnt how it all works.

This is my first project with XOOPS and I like it a lot. I have 6 live sites running Joomla, but that didn't quite do the trick here. So XOOPS it is! It's a very capable CMS. I miss the menu settings and the permission system in Joomla, though... I guess I want the best of both worlds. But I must say that I feel that I have a lot more control in Xoops, and I like that!

I have high expectations on the upcoming version. I know that developers never estimate release dates in public, but are we talking about weeks or months? (I guess that information is in here somewhere, but I havent seen it...)

I have been trying to remove that stupid pop-up / floating menu in the admin area, but I can't seem to find an option to turn it off or an explanation on how to remove it from the theme? It's difficult to make an effective search on this because it returns a lot of irrelevant posts (pretty common key words), but I'm sure somebody have asked about this before...

Why it's stupid? Well, it floats all over the screen, - very inconvenient when you have a lot of modules installed. But the really annoying part is that it shows a full menu to people with limited module admin permissions!

Is there another theme for the admin section that can be downloaded? (I'm new around here and I have a hard time trying to find my way aroud the block )

I experienced the dead links too, and I will contact Christian. Or maybe I'll just wait till it comes as a module, - and I believe it will. In my experience it's a very efficient way to stop most of the comment spam. Well, some of the most persistent ones are using real people to place the links, but that's not a big problem and they can easily be contained. It's the robots that has to be stopped, because they can bog down a website with thousands of comments in a day (believe me - I know!).

And I do appreciate the time and effort you guys put into this! I'm not a programmer myself (design and communication is my thing, only basic PHP). So I cannot contribute with anything of real value here, I'm afraid... But Open Source is very important. That's what makes the world go around! So keep up the good work

The true strength and the big problem with this community is that it's truely international, so the language barriers that we are all fighting is a problem. I'm sure there are many good solutions availible, but I can't read them... But that is something I'm willing to learn to live with, and I know that I'll be more comfortable in 6 months.

Anyways, it's time to close this discussion now and continue under a new headline. I'm satisfied and convinced that it's worth going on with this CMS.

(One of the reasons I think the information is hard to find, is that a valuable solution may turn up on page 4 in a thread with a completely different headline and the first 3 pages are about quite different issues. I know, - this last discussion should have been posted in a new thread named "Captcha")

So: Thanks everybody!

OK... I wrote an extensive .htaccess, and it seems to be running without any problems. I hope that will do the trick.

I have been looking for a captcha to prevent comment spam, because in other software that becomes a problem after a while. I don't know if it will be a problem here, but just in case... I couldn't find a module for it, - but on the other hand: I haven't seen any discussions about the need for one either, so I don't know...

I would like to let anybody comment on the articles. Is there a way to automatically IP-ban spammers, like checking against a blacklist on some other server? (It used to be jay-allen blacklist, but that one is gone and no longer supported)

How do you secure your websites without Protector, and are there any known issues that I should be aware of?

(Hmmm... Swain doesn't really count here, - I assume that he runs his own server and is in control. I'm on hosted servers, and I don't really know much about the security there. I don't trust anybody )

Yes, XOOPS seemed to be what I have been looking for all the time...

I started out years ago with Nucleus (it was a very good CMS at the time), then Mambo because I needed the Mambo-shop module for a project, and it became a habit. I turned to Joomla after the break-up from Mambo, but it was never really my choice. It's big and slow and it comes with tons of preinstalled irrelevant modules that can't be uninstalled, and a very messy TinyMCE editor is also in the core. I have never liked it, just used it. I have used Drupal too. It looks a lot like Xoops, but it's not very stable, and they don't care much about quality control... And I run into trouble with the multibyte fonts as soon as I started translating Drupal into Norwegian.

So I felt at home when I logged into XOOPS for the first time. The databases looked just fine, even if the user logged in as Ødegård... (this normally works fine in article text, but it messes up if it is used as login and sometimes also if it's used in section names).

I felt comfortable, and I would really like to make it work. But I couldn't make Protector work either... So I was thinking that it might be a PHP issue? Are you using Protector with PHP5?
