Why has Xoops devolved?

Ive been using Xoops on and off for about a dozen years. I used it in the past for a number of projects, both personal and for clients. I ran a 500+ member hiking group (before meetup.com existed) that had an event schedule, photo gallery and forum - worked beautifully well. Before Sharepoint came into its own, I've set up a half dozen intranet sites for clients to do basic project management and scheduling, forum, etc.

After a six year hiatus, I wanted to check it out again for a small side-job that I was working on and I am sorely disappointed. From what I am seeing so far, there are some face lifts to the themes and the installer is a bit more friendly (although still lacking) but functionally, xoops devolved!

Attempting to do what used to be a rather simple thing - set up a photo album that requires user logon to view.

I've used MyAlbum-p module for this exact thing about 8 years ago. Now, it's useless. Can't lock it down. Removing the sidebar shortcut for autonomous users simply hides the URL, but those are simple enough to guess and search engines will troll them within days of publishing. I could probably fix that, but the module itself is jacked! The album page with thumbnails looks like crap - way too busy and there is no intuitive way to see the actual full-size image! When clicking the thumb, the page goes to full-screen comment window (very 1999). In a few minutes of clicking, I could not figure out how to get it to show me the actual image. One would think that a photo album module would be at least good at showing photos, but no...

I downloaded two more modules. ExtGallery, which supposedly is 2.5-compatible, was a joke! You cannot upload images until you create a Category and then an Album. Zero instructions on how to do either one, but the category was simple enough. Then I spent 40 minutes clicking around the unfamiliar interface. If my life depended on it, I could not find how to make an f'n Album. Suspect the button is missing - great programming guys!

Third module was not any better. The whole evening wasted on amateur code that obviously nobody wants to work on anymore. I know, I got what I paid for. But it's a pity because it was simple, open and functional; no longer.

F-it! I am going to wipe/reload my box. I probably re-ran the PHP and IIS installers 20 times each - it's a mess now. I'll post back when I get the new box loaded.

That said, I had another thread going here about decent installation instructions on how to configure a brand new box with everything needed for XOOPS - install/configure MYSQL, PHP, IIS, etc. There does not seem to be a solid guide for this... Or is there?

I re-propegated the permissions on the website folder, ran the install again, this time without errors whatsoever. Still blank page!!

I just found an error on the install - it was a hiding one-liner off screen. I am not sure if it has been there all along, but I just notticed it.

The error came up on the page where you configure the site name, description etc.

It reads:

Quote:
PHP Warning: unlink(C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/tyson/xoops_data/caches/xoops_cache/xoops_system_modules_active_http%3A%2F%2F209_221_166_40.php) [function.unlink]: Permission denied in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\tyson\class\file\file.php on line 328

WTF does that mean?

I am going nuts here for 2 days already. WTF is wrong with this thing and why am I having issues?? This is a clean, recently loaded server and I just cant get XOOPS to work!

XOOPS Version: 2.4.4
Module Name/Version: NA
PHP Version: 5.1.2 (had same issue with newer 5.3.1)
MySQL Version: 5.1.44
Web Server Software (Apache/IIS/Other): IIS6
Operating System: Win 2003 Std x86
Theme you are using: Default
Custom template: (Yes/No) No
PHP Debug Messages: None (cant get them to come up!)
MySQL Debug Messages: How do I get these?
Smarty Debug Messages: How do I get these?
A full description of the issue:

Note: The server is an Active Directory Backup Domain Controller.

Putting the contents of the htdocs folder into the website folder, I go to the website address and get the installation screen without problems. I have ran the installation 20+ times now with various options (two themes, module installation, default directory vs moving them as recomended, etc).

The installation runs fine and without issue - everything says successful! Then when the install completes, I hit FINISH and get a blank page.

I have been posting for 2 days now and have gotten only 1 reply, to run the MD5 check on my download. This was done - the download is good.

What's going on?!

Hi All,

It has been 5+ years since I have done a from scratch install of XOOPS on a new box. The instructions that come with 2.4.4 suck!

Quote:
Setup WWW server, PHP and database server properly

WTF is "Properly"?! There are a jillion options in installation and configuration of those items and just having them installed and working does not mean that they function correctly with xoops. I remember 5 years when installing XOOPS 2.0, I spent a few days messing with PHP and mySQL versions. There was DLL file that linked PHP with mySQL that had to be referanced in some file... There were a few more gotchas before thing worked "properly".

I am using Windows and IIS6 - is there a good write-up on how to make things work from scratch?
