Hi--

A little addendum--

Some of the Spam-X features you need already exist in 2 XOOPS Modules--Protector and XOOPS Stats ver 0.45. for the IP logs and IP banning. If these features could be combined into a single mod and an RSS, such as Magpie, added for blacklist sharing, that would probably do the trick. There is another Module--BadBehavior--which kills spambots for you.

Just helping it all along <G> (thanks, Biteronboard)

Hi--

I'd like to see a Spam-X type module for Xoops. I think everybody will agree that Comment Spam has gotten completely out of hand on the web, and there is a real need for such a Module for Xoops. There are several other CMS webapps and portals that have this available--notably GeekLog.

I have run the XF Guestbook module, configured to make all entries by approval only, and it is effective. But, I found myself running to the site several times a day for no other purpose than to delete submissions from evrything from porno sites to prescription drugs. There are actuall Bots that implant these entries--notable among them those operated by "The Bulgarians". It is an enterprize for which they get paid.

Spam-X operates differently, by comparing site entries to a known list of content spammers, which are automatically banned from posting guestbook, or any other entry, as well as being prevented from registering with your site. Good Spam-x Mods include an RSS feed and intersharing of Blacklists between subscribers, the best of which has, until recently, been BTBlacklist. This site has been shut down only because it is in the RSS intershare system and has basically outlived it's usefulness.

I might add here that Spam-X, as such, was originally designed for WordPress, and that basic has been wrapped for other CMS, Portal, and Blog apps.

What about it, Mod Hacks?

Hi-

The simple answer is to use another Module--like MultiMenu 1.4c, which allows you to design Menus the way you want.

Tho you will only see one Main Menu entry for each Module-i.g.
"News" or "Sections" (if you kept the original names), you should get a sub-menu screen which lists all of the articles that are current in that Module--News for News--Section for Section, when you click the link. Personally, I use the News Mod for top-page articles, and the Sections Mod for "static" pages which never change.

I use the MultiMenu Module for both XOOPS internal and Intrasite pages which are involved with other DBs--such as Coppermine and paFileDB. Links in MultiMenu open in a new window on browsers, making back navigation easy.

To have this make more sense to you, have a look at my site, which is still being developed. The link is under my signature. That way you can see what these do. Hope this helps you.

Hi, Tricmandan--

Actually, the CSS resolution problem only affects older ver. of Firefox. They seem to have solved it in the latest build. ver. 1.01. Tho you hacked a fix for it on your site, I can tell no difference in the site view whether in Firefox or IE 6.

Just so you and others will know.

Download Firefox 1.01. They have fixed most of the CSS bugs with the new version--reads out like IE.

Just a thought

Alvaro--

Just "for what it's worth"---

After trying, and scraping, xcGallery and several others, I integrated my own XOOPS site with Coppermine, linking it off with Multimenu 1.4c which opens a new window. I scrapped xcGallery because my site, being a web presence for a Horse-related business, uses drather large graphics on the scale of > 600p width. I found that most of the gallery mods completely destroyed the resolution for the thumnails, making the pic totally unrecognizable. That is not at all true of Coppermine,(on which xcGallery is based), which does a fine job. You can do this without the necessity of changing the coding for the file-paths in Xoops, as well.

On you local computer. If you don't have it, you can download an Apache server for Windows from SourceForge. Mine works fine on XP Pro, and I haven't had a single problem with it. This will give your Win System the same capability with PHP and mySQL/myAdmin back-end that you will find on Linux/Unix hosts.
Its a neat toy and a good way to experiment with php/mySQL programs.

If you want to take a look at how I have this set up, just click the link on my signature line.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi--

If you are hosted on a Linux Server, you can CHMOD your file permissions via your FTP Client. If you are on a WinServer then you need to contact your host tech support regards how to go about CHMOD in the CP ver. you have. Most WinServer CPs I have dealt with only have limited parameters for file permissions on their File Managers.

For instance, in WS_FTP,(Linux/Unix) you right click on your file, then >Properties> Change Modes and change them there on the Server side.

Hope this is what you are looking for and helps you.

Hi--

Ok, first post. I have used XOOPS 5 minutes, rank newbie, and et cetera.

I read "Xoops on Crack" --last post by DonXoop re: a Topic related to Theme development suggestions. Owing to the date of that post, I can't find that such a Topic has been initiated, so bear with me. Maybe a Mod can move this to the appropriate Forum?

Anyway, Themes being a matter of aesthetics vs functionality and content, Theme design, at least IMHO, requires versitility in two diciplines-- Art and Technology. The problem seems to be that you seldom find both bents in the same Human. Anybody ever thought of teaming with an Artist? Agreed, most available
(free)themes bottom-feed; and, IMO as a Artist, so do most of the commercial ones. There are exceptions to be found even in the XOOPS Themes area on this website; notably those by MadSnake, who's "Gold" I chose for my new XOOPS site for my Horse business. Personally, I think this Theme is top-shelf, and it works very well for my application of it and purpose with it.

Modules. Ok, another thing I have noticed is that there are loads of Mods, several per function, and very, very, few with descriptive text as to what the Mod actually does, or comparing it with others of the same ilk. For those developing and publishing Mods, please take some time away from tweaking and write a comprehensive description of what your Mod is for--"calandar, ver--dit.dit, build 1.01" tells me (newbie) and others absolutely nothing. Being new to Xoops, but not to HTML, DHTML, SHTML, PHP, or web design in general, I know for a fact that installing and uninstalling tables on a regular basis to find out what a Mod does is a prime way to screw up a mySQL DB. I went through 3 calandar Mods (used for for posting Clinic and Event schedules on my site) before I found what I actually needed; that being Tiny_event, a K.I.S.S Mod that perfectly and very simply does the intended job. The Developer of same noted that he had no intention of developng the Mod any further--GOOD --its is a climax design and doesn't need any further developement. That brings to mind that there is great Virtue in "K.I.S.S Mods" and this XOOPS user would definately like to see more of same---take note.

On the other hand, I flatly like Xoops, and so over Nuke and Mambo. I find XOOPS much more user friendly than either of the others. I take care of other websites for other people, and the less time I spend on my own site, the better. The simplicity oof the XOOPS Core System allows me to accomplish what I need to do very quickly. (Yes I have tried Nuke and Mambo, and both are much more difficult to get around in or modify.)

Mithrandir---before you ask, yes, I fully intend to get involved more deeply when my learning curve with XOOPS is at a stage where I feel comfortable with doing that.

I'm done.
