sorry for this inflation of my postings, after session timeout and relogin I cant even edit my latest post ....
... but happy about ajaxbr's link I want to post my "link of the day":http://download.copernic.agentland.com/cgi-bin/relocation.cgi?http://download.copernic.agentland.com/ (I thought there is no trial version for professional edition of copernic, but yesterday night, I found it ... much better than google ... search for "copernicagentprotrial.exe" returns more than hits, google only 1 .... best thing you can sort by date modified, track changes ....)

hi ajaxbr,

I changed the field to mediumtext, but I still get error message like:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Your news is too long
allowed maximum length: 65535

if you have more suggestions I'd be happy ... many of the html-text I rob in the web are long

PS: The error described above seems to be solved by switching tool from "HTML Compress" (very good tool, but doesnot tolerate bad html) to "Absolute HTML Compressor" (thats a great freeware link from ajaxbr). I wanted to put this info to the erors described in posting above, but I can only edit my last posting?

Hi ajaxbr,

thanks a lot for your hints concerning "html compress" and "MEDIUMTEXT".

I had a first try and still have problems with the results.

1. original embedded html
org html
... has blanks on the first lines, which I want to get rid of

2. html after compress
http://66.195.17.52/~fporg/html/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1030
... still has blanks on the first lines and now displays urls ... a bit messed up after compression?

So I will keep on practicing to get rid of the blanks without changing anything else.

I will try out "MEDIUMTEXT" later ..... thanks asche

PS: ... dont laugh, but I usally copy long text before submitting to avoid writing twice .... it is more fun in the morning doing it right the first time.

news categories - just filtering with (sub)categories or parent-child?

If I remember right, the categories and subcategories in news modules work like real filters. Therfore the category does not display the articles of the subcategories.

I would like the news to be displayed in a hierarchical way, so that a 'mother category' not only shows its directly assigned articles, but also all article belonging to the 'child subcategories' (yes, just like a 'family picture'.

It would be nice for people to have full information of all child-subcategories already while digging deeper through the parent categories. I dont want to miss any interesting articles hidden in a container on third level, I would also like to see the article on second level already. So every article not only belongs to its container, but also to all of the parent categories 'above'.

Is this already a feature of one of the news module hacks? Can anybody outline how to solve this?

news article 'read more' - reduce number of lines displayed

All articles in news module on my site are displayed in full length. The button "read more" in the footer is displayed and it links to the single article allright, but I dont want to see the articles on the overview page in full length.

How do I manage to reduce the text of each article to a small number of lines?

Somebody knows?

Hi patsrule,

thanks for your hint, I changed forum to "allow html" and now I can insert html just fine.

Little problems remain like limitation to 65535 characters for input in textbox and some layout problems:

Quote:
XOOPS insert in the beginning of all the content a lot of empty space, which makes my content go down in the window and not being seen right from the beginning.

which is discussed here (only referrring to wfsection):
https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2315&forum=7

I will post my question there.

This is what my html insert looks now with the text beginning way down below:
http://66.195.17.52/~fporg/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1166&forum=8

thanks asche

PS: ... just because I am so thrilled to searching and "building categories" with www.anyfinder.de, I post two searches referring to 65535 character limitation and wfsection hack -> maybe somebody knows a good hack for modules news and forum, that solve html-layout problems.

How do I manage to embed html in a forum post?

I found the article about "Embed HTML in news item"https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=24839&forum=27&post_id=110137#forumpost110137 and just copy/paste of sourcecode between table tags works allright. But I dont get this managed in a forum post ....

Just to be sure it is no the configuration of my forum, I will try to post html here. If it doesnot work, I wonder if posting html is supported in newbb 2.0?

<table>
<tr colspan="3"><td>LOT NUMBERS</td></tr>
<tr><td>10:07</td><td>11:04</td><td>13:10</td></tr>
</table>

Sorry for interrupting .....
.... because this is a completely different topic:

I receive an error after applying language pack, which refers to "_MD_A_PREFS" and newbbhack.

error:
Notice [PHP]: Use of undefined constant _MD_A_PREFS - assumed '_MD_A_PREFS' in file modules/newbb/admin/index.php line 46

line 46,47:
<td><span class='fg2'><a href='<?php echo XOOPS_URL.'/modules/system/admin.php?fct=preferences&op=showmod&mod='.$xoopsModule->getVar('mid')."'>"._MD_A_PREFS;?></a></span></td>
<td><span class='fg2'><?php echo _MD_A_PREFS_DESC;?></span></td>

Somebody knows how to solve this?

sticky topics - Best Practices - Preinstallation

Hi everybody,

looking for a provider I had many Questions, which I still cant answer (so far I am happy with surpass).
https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=20137&forum=13#forumpost87211

I think it makes sense to improve the "sticky topics" concerning preinstallation and installation with "best practices" for newbies.

example for topics (sticky?), that could be heplful for newbies:

a)
Forum "Beginner's Corner":
Preinstallation - Best Practices:(topics mainly with distinction between manual and automatic install -> "please run scripta ..." -> important for newbies -> 10 Steps -> Best Practises)

b)
Forum "Installation Troubleshooting":
Installation - Best Practices:
(topics with tips regarding reinstallation -> database connection)

Is it possible to use the sticky topics a bit more intensivly and systematic? Topics like "first steps" - "walk through" - "example" would be great.

best regards

asche

Hi DonXoop,

thank you for the info, I give up hope for an easy excel-like solution.

So I just copied the contents of my excel-table into the news. This way I can display the titles and the urls without having the table-like looks and features (like sorting).

Just to give an impression, what this list of documents and url looks like now - in case somebody has an idea for improvement ....
