Since I never could manage enebling url rewrite in fm/news module my suggestion is that it should look like this options to choose:
rootmode:
website/article-name.html
webiste/topic-name/article-name.html
website/static-topic/article-name.html
modulemode:
the same but with modules/news/...
Also, similar or related articles to show is a must.
Simple image gallery would be nice or bridge with popular xoops image galleries via somekind of plugin so [img=name/number.jpg] or something similar would be great.

I've downloaded latest version from SVN (8 days old) and I still can't manage url rewrite to work.

Yup, Voltan's module is the best replacement it just need migration script to import/export from/to News and clones, SmartSection/Publisher and clones etc. It should be a standard option in Xoops... migration via XML... :)

I agree that the name of the module is an issue. fmContent or News is a great module with bright future, and it sould be renamed in fmNews or vNews (v stands for Voltan :) ), and the problem is solved.
There is only one reason why I never user fmContent/News on a production site: I couldn't manage url rewrite to work. But while I tested it in localhost I could say that it's great. Combining it with Publisher on the same website you could make a very powerful portal.
This is my issue: I'm running Preko ramena website that is online magazine with analytic content etc. Real journalism. It became very popular in my country. But I need more content and I want to add news section.

Does Xoops 2.5.5 consumes less memory?
I have issue with 2.5.4 and Publisher with 12.000 of categories and 25.000 articles. I need to enable max memory use for PHP 512mb not to have white screen. It's on my local host. On live server max memory is 90mb and it could not be changed, so xoops with that large database doesn't work.

I really like and support fmcontent module, but te main reason why i don't use it on live site is because I didn't manage url rewrite to work.
Url rewrite is working on the same site in Publisher, but when I install fmcontent (news) and try to do rewrite as it say in docs, I got 404.
