Re: There is no "Module Admin rights" & "Module Access rights "?

ok - that makes a bit more sense - have you uploaded and installed any modules? XOOPS does not come with ready made modules. You need to do these at the completion of your installation. Once you have modules installed then some should appear to be administered in the module admin rights area you are asking about. So...our next question is what modules have you actually installed? We presume you have XOOPS 2.0.16 running? Please check the read before you post below to discover how to give enough info for quick answers to problems.

Re: How did you hear about xoops?

About 18 months or mre ago I wanted to build my own website. I fouhd a cheap host and they had c-panel - all those choices! So i did a bit of trial and error and research and ended up using c-panel to install xoops. Then came here and got help to fix up my problems getting started...and then learned more. I thank the heavens above for module and theme writers! My experience up until that point was front page - so I had a very steep learning curve.

bit unsure on which search box you mean, thought i had fixed it for both (new Google one?)
- I think so - and I was viewing in firefox.

registration? Interesting question. I can image some internet travellers feeling they are being puched into signing up to something they don't want to do (My old man comes to mind - they won't let me in unless i sign up - what am i signing up for? they better not wanna try and pinch my details!) - but what I have on my site is a top block explaining there is lots available on the site that require registration for them to participate.

You could go further - 'to keep this site safe and secure for you, and to keep it free from spammers and those who would spoil your experience is is neccesary to make some parts of this site restricted to those who care enough about it's security to get a login in user name and password. if you wish to know more about how your details are secure please click here.' (After that you would have an 'about' static page that explains in more detaile why signing in is important for security and a promise that you do not harvest email addresses. You could even tell them you can't see their password - they must change that themselves.)

Just an idea - but I think all sites that encourage us to 'sign in' or create an account need to explain just what we are signing in for...even worse are those that say sign up now for your free 7 day trial and if you hunt and peck long enough you discover what they offer is out of budget range anyway so their free 7 day trial would be useless to you! )

Anyway...IMHO I think login whould be visible for your already registered users and i thik register now and an explanation of what benefits there are for those who register should be on every site. HTH

Re: Review,Constructive criticism,On Going Assistance??

Well oneness seems to be working well - but the second site you created - can't make that out - it comes up with a jsp site now...???

Anyway = back to onesness - loaded fine for me but don't know if there were lots on at the same time. Dropped in a painting for you.

The search box is out of whack in firefox but the rest of the wizand theme seems ok. I cannot see a sign in on 'wizanda' or phpbb style but can on the aston flower - so there is a lack of consistency there. For what it is worth I don't like having to drop down boxes to find menu items - but that is personal. The tags are good but i wasn't sure what to click on when the search cme up.

Your site is such a unique use of XOOPS - keep working at it.

Re: Stupid WiwiMod Question

I am more concerned about my members figuring it out since most like to just press buttons. Not sure how to simplify it to them in an explaination.

And so you should - for many people writing in a wiki context is a new skill. We have managed to learn email, word processing, and some of us even simple wysiwyg web pages. In recent times the development of IT has made us transfer those skills to blogs, and online photo and file sharing. However, the learning of using wiki requires news skills.

In a raw wiki the wysiwig is gone from where you type, but some wikis do have a toolbar of buttons that helps. On xoopsdocs when our work area was alive and kicking at first I was stumped - but links to the sandbox and a file defining the codes and what they do helped. Then a toolbar appeared and that made things easier for the normal things - formatting, inserting pictures etc. However, I know my whole thinking pattern had to change - I had to learn '[' 'code' ']' and not be frightened of it. I also had to learn the lingo that goes with understanding code (known as metalanguage) For those that grew up on a diet of microsoft office like myself it can be daunting, especially if they have never ventured into using code of any kind - on boards like this or on websites.

You can also see a change in the expected IT skills of school students in the change in curriculum - for example here in Australia. Being built into the standard skills and learning expected from students are the IT skills that would allow them to use blogs, albums, wikis and webpages with ease. This is new. Up until now the curriculum included word processing, spreadhseets and exlectronic texts - now they are include more dynamic skills such as those needed for developing interactive web pages - blogs, boards - and wikis.

Our new English curriculum refers to 'multimodal' texts - these are essentially electronic texts that include any variation of movie, sound, printed text and image - ie - dynamic websites.

So...while we wait for the teenages to grow up and enter the online adult communities we have some adults to educate as well. As always - if your web users have kids their kids will show them how! But if not you will need to link to the sandbox, a tutorial, a code list, and have a go at putting in a button bar - they do exist - Wizanda may be your best helper there. And...remind these new wiki users to be patient with themselves...for some it will be a big learning curve. Others will do it easily - it will vary greatly depending on their IT skills and their thinking proesses.

Re: Stupid WiwiMod Question

Hi John - perhaps this link will help. I found I had to change my thinking or assumptions and habits based on what I know about word processing programs and easy to build web program like the microsoft collection. Wiki works differently - you need to code your links in. I don't think you missed anything. JAVesey refers to link 'code' - not 'button'. That is, I think, what you are misinterpreting. If you venture into wikipedia you will see links to other pages all over the place - all you need is the right code yournewpagename and once you activate this by clicking on it you will have a new page that is linke to where 'yournewpagename' is. Perhaps you are after how to encode or create a contents table - hopefully the link above will send you in the right direction.

Learning the code takes some time. I miss the convenience of pressing buttons to do things, but I hope to get better at it with time. Some will argue this is easier. I don't want to go there - but I am challenged by wiki and won't give up coming to terms with how to use it.

The sandbox in the above link is a great pleace to make some sense of how wiki works and start learning the code. HTH

Re: Module like Yellow Pages

I personally do not use any of these modules, but in response to your question xdircetory seems to be well recieved. Perhaps some general advice on module selection and what to look out for might help - if you apply some of this criteria to the modules you have listed you might be able to make a decision. Look at this FAQ here. Hope it gives you some help- sorry i cannot be more specific with a recomendation.

Re: Issue with the login

There is some incompatibility?

Uhmm - a little guessing here -with 2.0.9 most likely, 2.0.14 possibly - there were quite a few issuews with 2.0.14 and we moved very quickly to 2.0.15. I'd recomend upgrading them both to the latest release and see what happens then. be sure to follow the instructions to the letter and backup your site data first.

Re: How do i add a module and theme to my admin menu from the website?

Please consider the following:
New users should always checkout the following:
1. Documentation - linked on the left. Specifically the administration manual
2. The FAQ section - linked on the left - specifically the sections on gloassry, beginners first steps, modules, blocks and themes. There are links to visual tutorials here.
3. The search function on the top right.
Please check also the read B4U post link below if you have problems.

For Visual tutorials please go here

Sounds to me like the tutorials will be your best bet along with This section of the FAQ. Most of your questions will be answered here - and you will need to get and learn to use an ftp program. There is also sound advice on programs you need here

Re: Prob. change of Database Address

You will need to check the path to your database in your mainfile.php - start with this FAQ but there are probably more. Since your host made the changes maybe they will assist. There are these things to check:

DB connection failure:

1) Wrong server location
2) Wrong Username Password
3) Wrong Database
4) User given has no access rights to that DB
5) Invalid password scheme being used for database access

So its a simple 5 check situation... If it still fails, you have something wrong....
IE Firewall blocking access to the MySQL service or MySQL extension not enabled (PHP5), MySQL Service not running.
