Using a menu mod I think you have better control. Try for starters iMenu. You may then assign menu items by groups. You can all of this without having to edit the mod.

I am pretty sure you can not redirect dynamic pages using htaccess and man you are slowing down the performance of your site by using the htmaccess - period. If you do not have much traffic - it does not matter. If you have an htaccess file, the querry looks in each folder until it finds that file before a page is loaded. I would probably use a php script to redirect. I am also looking for a non htaccess solution.

Flash files can be embedded easily using Newbb_fileup.

Go to:

newbb_fileup

See it in action

To Include a text editor is a snap.

Gestroud,

In which respect is CBB better? Updated could be one reason but what about the features?

Newbb_fileup allows you to embed SWF and image files and sorts Topics. There is an issue with perhaps all of these forums, that is, the notification icons are not accurate and produce false indications. This is more of a core issue.

That tV site is using a Java script - this may be crashing your system.

In short, no, XOOPS will not be able to compete with Joomla at its current method of operation. We are not comparing two applicances side by side, software is a way of life a philosophy that manifast itself in a product.

The primary difference in Joomla and XOOPS is the level of co-operation between developers and the steerring group. With the lack of harmonious collaboration effort, Joomla will surpass Mambo and Xoops. It is the mindset and culture of the development community that will ultimately decide when, what and how things get done. Don't take my word, look at the progression of Joolma - in short time it ihas a heck of a develoment cycle, stable product and a huge user base that actually responds in short time to help request.

I think the question is, "Why this difference?" Road Maps are meaninless unless the development community is working together.

More talent, cloning or adapting for XOOPS CMS to emulate what you see in Joomla will unfortunately not be the solution. So there may be many technical differences between these products, the bigger picture is the "policy" and the level of co-operation which governs development. XOOPS is far behind Joomla - I wish it weren't that way.

The seemingly inability of the XOOPS in "getting it together" with the developers, steering commitee and including other devleopment ideas has produced the Cube fork. Which has again in short time, produced a secure XOOPS core and are on their way in producing an aggressive development community. I think it will be easier to produce modules that try to accommodate the features of Joomla than it will be to change the politics of Xoops. I do wish this would not be the case and that Xoop's inner circle would be more democratic in the way policy is made. There are also issues with regard to pride of ownership with this XOOPS site and product. In summary, the seed on which the XOOPS foundation is built would have to change to be in step with Joomla.

Rick

How can I protect myPhotos folder within Xoops?

Dear XOOPS Guides,

I have created a new folder named "myphotos." It is in my upload folder. XOOPS protects folders and content by not showing the acutual URL. How can I get XOOPS to do that with my newly created folder. Please no .htaccess.

Rick

Dear Allnewtome,

A word on Notifications -

This function you request of having the ability to set notifications within the Admin panel I think is needed and also a more eloquent subscription method is needed ( using version 2.0x). Notifications (if any geek or core developer has ever taken the time to test out on the general public) it difficult for users new to XOOPS to set correctly. Let us not reinvent the wheel, this solution has already been done in other CMS products "Subscribe or Unsubscribe." This should not be hidden away. How many times have you had to tell others to go to Forum Opitons and set notifications? Then after they get there, they still set it incorrectly. Just read the options - they are just confusing.

The admin should be able to set notification for Group, by Topic and /or by manually modifying the user's preferences on forum notifications. If you were to do that now you would need to re-assign a new password. Sending out by mass emailing is not at all going to secure that all are being set to be notified. When a post is imperative to be read, the emailing campaign is not adequate.

Regards,

Rick

Our company has discovered what may seem to very serious problems with XOOPS - these may or may not be core related.

A - Group Block Assignment:

First of all the group scheme is very confusing and is not adequate. The rational is that group blocks should be independent of other group blocks. I have found this to not be the case. Once you have created a group, that new group and the defualt group (Registered) are always linked with one another. For instance, you have just created a new group named Student:

- if you assigned a block to a Registered group, you have also assigned it to the Student group.

- if you have removed a block from Registered group, you have also removed it from the Webmaster and Student groups.

- If you remove Main Menu from the registered group, you have also removed from it from Registered group.

- If you change the block order (0,1,2,3) of the Main Menu block in the Registered group , you have also altered the Webmaster's block order.

The Registered group is the default and the first level. All subsequent groups must include the Registered group. This does not seem logical if you were to ask the average person. If you are the Webmaster group, you are not associated with Regestered but all other groups must include the Resgistered group. This could rack havoc with any sensible thinking person.

B - Notifications:

If you read the last post of a series of 10 post which the other 9 have not been read, you set the notification flag for that thread to "all read."

To fix this would seemingly be simple - but it will degrade the performance of the entire forum significantly.

I would like to be wrong on both counts -

Regards,

Rick

A notification settings for each user should be set for each member during subscribing them to a private forum.

However the notification routine should be modernized to set notifications on for all those who reply to a forum. Moodel for instance sets notifications on for all those who post, replies or visits a forum.

Forcing notification or setting a subscription within the Admin would be most needed. If the member for some reason fails to set notifications on for any particular discussion they are a member of, the admin can not see this, they would have to log on as that member to set notification.

Forcing notification should also be allowed at the admin level but groups or individual.

Please contact me as we may be working on this solution for our needs.

Regards,

Rick

P.S. I think the notification routine needs to be overhauled. The notifications has inherent problems. php/bb has solved the issues with notifications - XOOPS framework, may have to scrap its the current way it tries to notify.

WF-Sections - Quite a number of changes required to be PHP5 compatible. Minor changes to compatibility with XOOPS 2.2

I personally would not use 2.2 for commercial use - it does not offfer enough of an advantage to suffer the problems in getting the needed modules completely working. Most module building and upgrading are done with those who have day jobs and family. You can not be sure when these modules will be 2.2 ready.

The majority of XOOPS modules for version 2.1 need to be improved upon and are outstanding the needed upgrades. So having the upgrade may not be enough if there are problems with the 2.1 XOOPS version.

Suggestions and Isuues

A - Test out WF- Sections with 2.1 and roll back if it works

B - Be willing to wait indefinitely for the langauage fix from the developer

C - Pay a contractor to make the needed improvements (good luck on trying to find a reliable contractor)

D - Be willing to wait indefinitely for the langauage fix from a user

E - Be ready to discover other hidden problems

I hope this helps you,

Rick
