Thanks zyspec. I should have mentioned that I did download and install XOOPS Frameworks (default installation) as well as xoopseditor. Maybe it's in the config there that I missed something (even the readme seemed as complicated as anything).

All modules being added are latest versions direct from the modules download area of this site.

Hmmm, ok, guess I may need to look at reinstalling those and see if it makes a difference

Sorry, XOOPS version is the latest (2.3.3). PHP version is 5.2.6. I did post the names of the modules .... (FORUMS: Cbb and X-forum, GAMES: freegames).

I have read heaps which is why I've got as far as I have already with very few questions - I've searched for the answers to these problems and can't find any solutions ... that's why I asked in here - that's what the forum is for lol.

The IRC chat sounds interesting although I'd prefer not to use IRC if possible. Still, if you could send me a DL link that would be awesome - thanks.

Another question .... I would like to have my site home page as showing the last two or three posts (truncated to a certain number of characters, with a "read more" link) from admin-defined forums. Similar in a way to the way IPB Portal and MKPortal etc act for forum sites.

Any suggestions (keep in mind I am definitely a newbie in this XOOPS thing lol) are most welcome.

Firstly, apologies if this has been dealt with somewhere - I searched for it but couldn't find any solution, hence these questions.

FORUMS
I have tried two modules: CBB (newbb) and X-forum. When I install CBB it installs correctly, I click on the link from the site as a user and I get a blank screen (status "done") and nothing else. When I install X-forum, I get an error message saying:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method MyTextSanitizerExtension::getinstance() in /home/public_html/Frameworks/textsanitizer/module.textsanitizer.php on line 215
All I want is working forums - what I thought would be the easiest module to get working, is causing me the greatest headaches. Anyone care to help out a XOOPS newbie?

GAMES
I installed the 'freegames' module. Again, everything installed successfully. When I go to it as a user I get a black square with white space inside.

CHAT
I would welcome suggestions as to the best module to use - they all seem to have been written so long ago. I'm just after a site-integrated non-popup chat.

Just when I thought I was getting the hang of this XOOPS thing .... hahaha .... shows I still have soooo much to learn.

Any (constructive) suggestions welcomed.

Hey thanks jd ... very easy to follow. Now do you have one to help me build my whole site? LOL

Looks like I can do away with the lobotomy now - I'll leave that up to the developers ;)

All I want to do is try some themes out - change the look of the site. It should be straight forward ... but it's not (at least it doesn't appear that way). I'm using version 2.3.3 just downloaded.

I've tried uploading files for the downloaded themes into my /themes/ directory but XOOPS doesn't see them. There's an upload facility in the admin area but it says files have to be .tar or .tar.gz .... but all the theme downloads from the XOOPS site are zip files.

Ok, what am I missing here .... is something stuffed here, or do I need a lobotomy?

Hi everyone, I've noticed some threads about phpmyspace and how it seems to be a direct copy of XOOPS. I have phpmyspace but I'm interested in achieving the same result using XOOPS - that way I support GPL and have a lot more options available for customization.

The site I'm trying to build is a community-type site for friends and family around the world (although it will be open to everybody). I want it to be like the phpmyspace/My Space sites with video, music, forums, chat, etc. The only problem is that my knowledge of PHP etc is not expert level, and I don't want to spend month after month trying unsuccessfully to build a site (I got the phpmyspace site functioning in about 10 hours or so).

So, assuming I use XOOPS itself and build it, can I expect to build an equivalent site quite easily without having to hack code and spending hours upon hours working on it?

If I can, then I'm quite keen to look at it.

I'd appreciate advice from all the XOOPSers (is that the word?) for a newbie.

Hi everyone, I'm new here and I couldn't find a more appropriate forum to say what I had to say, so I hope this forum will suffice.

I have been building websites for a few years now, although mostly forums and portals, and I have recently moved into the wonderful world of CMS's. In order to try and learn the various CMS's out there I spent a good four weeks with Joomla and Drupal to try and get a functional site operating. To be fair, Drupal was given about three days and the rest of the time was with Joomla.

In four weeks I managed to get a basic website and not much more. It was tough going trying to learn all the different tricks of the trade. After four weeks - frustrated - I downloaded XOOPS ...... and within 8 hours I had an 80% functional website (graphics need doing etc).

All I wanted was a CMS that fully functional and easy to understand ... and I have finally found it with Xoops.

So this is just my two cents worth ... to say to everyone involved with XOOPS that you now have a new convert in the ranks. Your product is amazing, and so easy to understand. Congratulations to you all on a magnificent job ... and I have ensured that all my pro-Joomla, pro-Drupal and pro-phpNuke friends are all being introduced to the power that XOOPS offers to them.

My other CMS test sites are deleted now ... and I'll be sticking with XOOPS from now.

Random Quotes problem

Hello, I have installed Random Quotes 1.0.1 and all is working well except for one small thing.

The name of the module is Random Quote but installed on my site it shows with the heading of "The Quote" - I want it to say "Random Quote".

Trying to be clever, I thought I would edit it in the /language/english/modinfo.php file from:
define("_RQ_BNAME","The Quote");

to
define("_RQ_BNAME","Random Quote");

but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
