I am really frustrated trying to figure this out and I am hoping someone might be able to help.

Mysql has a default database which was established when my site host gave me sql permission. Is this the database that I want to name for installation? Because no matter what I have tried I cannot connect to that database. I have gone into phpmyadmin and confirmed the name of the database. I have used my sign on and password and it didnt work and so my site host gave me his admin sign on and password and it still says "could not connect to database server" ???

I am wondering if I am using the correct database hostname. I have tried the site URL, i have tried the ftp to the provider, i have tried the IP number of the site and I have tried using the default local host.

If anyone knows what else I could try, please reply. In the meantime I will continue trying things. Thank you

thank you for the welcome. did you read the part about that i did search the faq? i am not foolish. the pages i would like to see say that i do not have permission for some reason. i was hoping for a link or a direction to a specific area that might address the particulars of customization

I am very new to all of this in fact I am betting ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: '@localhost' (Using password: YES)for MySQL and my host provider is trying to resolve that for me BUT in the meantime I have a few questions

I really love the whole content management idea but I want the site to look as much like my current site as I can. Is there a good faq article on how to customize the site? I don't mean just module order but the whole look of the site. Can you customize it in an html editor? I have been looking through some of the posts which suggested themes and templates and some of them are hot but it says I don't have access to view the articles that they posted.

Could someone please direct me to the most detailed information on how to start with either the default download template or a different template and customize it?

I hope this made sense with my limited understanding.

Thank you very much!!

now the error that i get says

No connection possible: Host 'dns1' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server

I really appreciate your help with this. I would contact my host but they are of course closed till Monday now and I was hoping that I could work on this site over the weekend. I don't understand this error message.

I created a new user and gave that user permission to the sql database. I did this using the e-Soft InstaRak control panel.

The database was apparently a default database created when I was given sql permissions.

My host company said to try the IP address of the host which I tried to no avail.

I don't know have phpmyadmin I only have the control panel. I don't know anything about the php code....do I paste that into a blank page in FrontPage and upload it? do i need the ' ' around the user and password?

Thank you I'm sorry to be so unintelligible I didn't realize how entailed a XOOPS site installation is.

I am trying to install xoops. I know the name of MySQL database and the password. I have tried to enter the host server name as the same i enter in an ftp program and I have tried the IP address of the server and I have tried leaving it "localhost".

The database username is the same that I use to access my site.

The path and URL have been verified.

Each time I then get to the final screen it says "could not connect to the database check to see if the database is configured correctly"

Does anyone know what I might try?

Thank you!
