Don't feel bad about this particular problem.

My Who's Online block has disappeared entirely and after two months I still have not figured out what happened.

It was there successfully for almost 2 years, and then decided it didn't want to be there anymore. No amount of manipulating block settings helps.

I've been following this thread to see if anything dealing with your problem sheds light on mine.

Yes, I see now that your body stretches out from your header size, even in IE7.

Changing the template for Newbb would certainly be a fix.

But, have you considered changing to CBB? Is there any particular reason you are sticking with Newbb when most Xoopsters have moved to the CBB branch? I know there are valid reasons for staying with Newbb, but you might try CBB which (I believe) does a somewhat more efficient job with template design.

I usually try out 10-20 XOOPS templates in a month, fixed width and variable widths, and have never had a problem with CBB in any of them.

You'll be happy to know it works in IE7.

IE6 does not render HTML in a standard way. Many templates and themes have a work-around built in to take care of this.

I don't remember the exact fix, since it has been so long that I have had to fool with IE6 work-arounds. If you search here on something like "IE6 problems" you should be able to find the solution.

Some initial advice from someone who has done there been that.

Get an almost free site. I happen to use Mher.org which is $1 per month.

Do a fresh install of the versions you are running.

Experiment with saving database information, upgrading, and/or pulling in database information to the newest versions if you cannot upgrade.

Keep the site (almost free) for future experiments. I always run new modules on the experimental site to make sure I am happy before installing on a live site.

Who's Online block gone

My "Who's Online" system module block suddenly disappeared.

All the permissions are right. The block was set for right column, top page. Changing to all pages, to different order rank, to left column, --nothing works. It disappeared for all users, even the Webmaster. This block has worked correctly for years in this site and others that I have.

I have made no big changes to explain this. The most recent install was probably CBB 3.07. I am running XOOPS 2.0.15.

Anyone else see this happen?

Controlling spammers and bad users

What do we do when we have a user who is spamming or in some manner making life hard for you as webmaster?

I sometimes delete the account and then have to go back and manually delete each post the spammer made. Of course, the spammer just re-joins and starts again. Sound familiar? Most forum software (Simple Machines, for one) allow you to delete an account and all the posts of that person with one click. I wish XOOPS had that feature.

You can ban IPs, but that only works if the person has a unique IP.

How about this --I haven't tried it yet. You create a group, let's call it "Doghouse". When you run into a problem user, you change his group from "registered user" or whatever to "Doghouse." In group settings you limit this person however you think appropriate. Certainly you would take away his ability to post in your forums.

Has anyone tried this? Any other suggestions?

I am in the process of bringing about 80 pages of content into the Articles module. They all have good meta information that have done well with the robots at another site.

Of course, when you look at the source you see the standard XOOPS metas at the head of the source code, not the actual metas that are on the page. That comes after. I wonder how the engines view that? I suspect they ignore the second set of title and keyword metas.

Anyway. Is there any easy way to turn off the XOOPS creation of metas for every page? I know there are modules to create metas on the fly, but I still would prefer to control the meta information.

CBB post box size

For some reason the editing box users see is much larger in CBB 3.05 than earlier versions. You have to scroll the whole page to hit the submit button.

I took a quick look at the CBB templates and did not see where the boxsize can be edited. Different themes don't matter either.

Anyone have any thoughts?

The newest recommended version 2.0.14 fixes the problem.

The 2.2 update, fork, dead end, or whatever you choose to call it, was/is unfortunate. I wasted a good deal of time trying to "upgrade" sites only to have to go back to 2.0x in frustration.

Folks who are new to XOOPS are probably baffled by what they should be using. Logically, 2.2x should be better than 2.0x.

Oh well....
