OK.

My hosting company had a failure on the MySQL server hard disk.
Their backup system also had a problem which meant that they were only able to restore data up until last January.

Thankfully, the technicians were able to retrieve all the data from the failed disk and now all is back to normal.

I realise this is not a XOOPS problem but I do feel that for beginners, this kind of event can be unsettling so it might be good to keep this here as a reference.

Thanks again for your support.

I can't see how this can be a XOOPS problem but I am posting here to see if it has happened to anyone else.

I've been running a XOOPS setup since last August.
I think it is a *nix host,

using 2.0.7.3
about a dozen modules 150 users, 10 groups.

Sunday night, all OK. I uploaded, read a few bulletins, posted a news item. All good.

Monday morning, I get a call to say that one of my users cannot log in.
I check and his account is not there.

in fact a lot of people who recently registered are no longer there.

Search...

Woah, the latest post in the NewwBB is now January this year. I was just reading the posts the day before and there was a lively discussion going on in several areas. All gone!

Other modules, wf-downloads. All recent uploads are not there. In fact - just last Friday I had updated a file. I deleted an old version of something, uploaded the new one.

I had a mail from someone telling me thanks for (ahem) finally getting the new version up, it worked well. I say this because it verifies that i had actually succeeded with the upload...
BUT
now the new one is not only gone but the old one is back up there!!

This is across the board in all the modules except one. The XOOPS gallery i use as image gallery still has pictures uploaded about a month ago. All the other modules (about 9 or 10) have regressed to january...

I am guessing that a SQL restore has been done, i can't think of anything else. of course i am asking my hosting company but...

does any one have any ideas??

Hi Guys
seems to be generally pretty quiet on the QA forum as a whole so I don't feel soooo bad but...sorry I haven't been around.

jen, I hope everything went alright with you...

jorgebarrero, glad you could make it to the shoutbox. let me know if you are available at any times....but...time is pressing, and we are losing momentum so here is the plan.

We have to date three things I think.

1.a spreadsheet with a breakdown of the current system admin UI and it's buttons, labels, descriptors and other text.

2.a glossary which provides English for some of the above.

3.a proposed re-breakdown of the interface from jorgebarrero.

We are behind schedule and I am loathe to lose any more momentum so I would like to suggest.

a- we complete the system module breakdown as per the spreadhseet, finalising the glossary entries in English and selecting the standard terminology

b- submit that and only that as our first unit of work. not sure who to, but Dave_L says pretty much anything would be OK so we can just submit the spreadsheet I guess.

From here on, I can see several things.

i- We need to look at the other system modules and other modules too and suggest standardised language for them in the same way. (feedback from devs will help guide us here I think.)

ii- The Help text language needs to be 'standardised' somehow. - the system too, jorgebarrero's idea of help on/off at the user7s request is excellent.

iii - discuss jorgebarrero's UI ideas with some core developers to see what the next big revision of XOOPS is bringing. jorgebarrero's ideas are great, I really like them, but the core devs may already be working on this, certainly some people are and we need to get some agreement before continuing otherwise we may end up with just another possibility where we really need standards.

iv - language translation of the glossary. once terminology is set, need a team of translators.

v- a system for a developer to be able to check any new module for language consistency....maybe a list of volunteers who are au fey with the glossary, can be asked to check any new module...??? certainly that needs to be looked at - how does a developer actually check their module.??

I am sure there are many more but let's finish this one off. It will help us all I think if we can finish even this small item.

I will look over the spreadsheet from before and work on the glossary myself.

Let me know how you are doing and how much we reckon we can get done over the next couple of weeks.

Cheers

Did you try shoutbox at my site?
http://altiacentral.com/index.php

login as jorgebarrero and pass is qaqa

if we can arrange a time, this seems to work OK??

nice and easy.

In the meantime, though jen is off for a few days, so we can wait for a bit to get the latest glossary.

How about we work on the admin UI a bit more?

I have been through the system on that last spreadsheet, how about a different section or module?

Hey there, I guess it might be tougher than we thought to get a chat going. pretty snowed under here I'm afraid, silly season ...still. I will leave the shoutbox module up and any two out of three are welcome to use it of course...

On the Look and Feel. Have you seen any of the tabbed admin UI areas? I really like tabs and so do a lot of people. I think that perhaps tabs linked with the UI that jorgebarreo proposed could really work.

The problem with the tabs themselves is that if we have too many tabs, they wrap and I think that causes confusion. So that second level is the key....

Yeah I agree too, super is not a good word to choose, I do think, though that there are actually quite a few of these and we need to do something about them.

we schould probably even consider a 'rule' or 'limit' like four words maximum, or some such...anyhow....just another area to look over.

Here's one full spreadsheet.
version c

This is one cycle through the system module.
Probably missed a few things but should be pretty close.

If we could get a mock-up site set up, that would be great. It would make it easier for us and easier to show a core dev what we are doing...how long would that take though>
I am no programmer either...
it seems, though that a lot of this will be simply editing the php definition lists in the language folder...

chat>
when???
I'm only really free late night here which is
GMT 11:30 (8:30p.m. here) onwards...
