are your general settings set to yes for updating theme?
go to:
admin/preferences/general settings

Find:
Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?

And:
set to yes

just cut it from here open the style.css file and paste it anywhere you find an open line on the page it doesn't really matter where.

I just believe the code should be cleaned up and a lot of the attributes should be switched to the .css file.

W3C Markup Validation
Enter your web address in validate by url

But the end results your site looks great =)

NOTE: This theme needs a lot of work and I'm not talking about the menu change... But I do like the visual looks of it =)

Your right it does cause the same problem when left in. I didn't notice since I just removed it completely.

It should probably be removed since it is the base that most use for creating new themes.

Just my opinion =)
