I registered as well - same problems. Hey... this isn't a ploy to get loads of members is it? lol! I would recomend slightly altering the theme though... the input boxes are a nightmare to find!

Although I understand that some of you like the threaded view option, I would hasten to bet that the majority of users on your sites just his the nearest "reply" button as opposed to replying to a particular thread, and do not enter a new subject into the subject field to identify their message.

I know this is the experience I've had with forums, which kind of detracts from a threaded view in the first place. If you now switch to threaded view on this forum, you will see a multitude of posts entitled "Re: Post your feature requests for the newBB".

So how do you tell what each post is about, or which post they were replying to in the first place? You can't, because 99% of users are not used to a threaded system, making it practically worthless, IMO.

With that in mind, I'm sure I'm not the only person who would weant to enforce a flat view upon their users. Notice that many XOOPS users go with PHPBB or IPB, which only offer a flat view. I don't know quite how it would work, as I know there are some reasons to keep the threaded view, which I respect, but the option to enforce flat, with only the one reply button as opposed to one per post, would be good.

God, it's late - I've been drinking, and that was a long post - my apologies!

We have determined it must be a script problem do with sessions?

As you'll notice, there are an awful lot of XOOPS sites running without this problem... xoops.org being an example itself. So is it really realistic to call it a script problem? Therefore, I would seriously consider the possibility that your host does not know too much about what he / she is talking about. From the way you are talking, it is pretty much a one man band, possibly a third party reseller, who has very little experience or knowledge.

My bet is that there are issues with the way the php.ini is setup, maybe the php modules that are, or are not installed on the host, or memory restrictions on running scripts.

Have you tried logging in multiple times? When I had the problem on my previous host, I found that four or five login attempts would let me in, believe it or not!

I had the same problem... as soon as I moved hosts it disappeared.

Steve,

Maybe you should consider the option that the reason nobody can give you defined limits on the number of users etc, is because nobody has yet encountered such restrictions.

This in itself should be enough encouragement for you!

Gareth

A company with good shared plans should be enough - always ask them what their server and traffic contention ration is, ie: how many users are on the same connection you are. A high contention ration will slow you down, much in the same way that shared broadband will do.

I can only recommend hosts that I know, and of the ones I've encountered I would go with One and One (oneandone.co.uk) This will depend on your preference of locality though - this is a UK based company with a data centre in central europe, so it won't suit everybody. But the plans are more than generous, with dedicated managed servers starting at £29.99 UKP per month (approximately $40 USD)

If you do a search on the forums for "xoops host" there are plenty of posts and recommendations from other users.

Regards,
Gareth

That's pretty much the crux of it I think, for the moment at least. I can see a number of ways around this, but these would have to be embedded into the way XOOPS handles themes and templating overall. For example, how about a system similar to the way Mambo handles menu items and News articles: You get a couple of little arrows pointing up and down ro rearrange those items into the order you'd like. If XOOPS could incorporate something similar into the way blocks are displayed it would make for slightly more flexibility. But that said, it's hardly a critical issue, and I'm sure it would take a lot more time to do than it's currently worth the devs spending on it.

I would go with XOOPS over PHP-Nuke any time. I find XOOPS not only more user friendly, but also a lot more flexible. Ever noticed that all Nuke sites looks the same? Not always the case with XOOPS - check out Gaining Mass to see what you can achieve with a bit of time and effort.

By the way - the site has nothing to do with me whatsoever, before you start shouting "shameless plug"!

It sounds to me more like he's not being logged in as admin and is being returned to the index as anonymous. Several people have experience the same problem, and in all the cases I know of so far it's been a hosting issue.
