spankee, did you do any update or change to your site? The spike in usage stopped the same day on 6-16-2007. No spikes occurred in the past 24 hours at all.

(Thanks for creating this new thread. Hopefully this will help others.)

Some hosts have individual experiences with certain applications that they base their restrictions on.

Currently we are having a lot of problems with Coppermine Photo Gallery and the TopSites PHP directory. Coppermine does not perform well when galleries receive high traffic, and TopSites looks to be a target for bots right now.

Are we going to disable either, network wide? Likely not, but we may disable particular installations that cause problems.

Anyhow, the reason I came to the XOOPS forum today and happened along this thread was because we are actually having a XOOPS issue today.

There have been timeouts on one of our shared servers and nothing is "screaming" out to us, except for one site. Here are some captures from the past 3 days:

Resized Image

This site is running XOOPS - it's a family heritage site, has a few modules installed to keep track of family trees.

Why would it be causing such a stir? We keep seeing the particular module /pgv/ancestry.php in the logs and think that may be the culprit... any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Kayla

It's been a long time since I posted here. :(

Surpass has been very busy which means our customers are very busy. It's almost 2007 and we will unveil new things then. (Shh!)

Hope the XOOPS team is doing well.

For us (especially from an abuse standpoint), it's a step forward and we wish other hosts would do the same.

Hello there - If you're asking about VPS, it is like having your own dedicated server so you get to create as many goodies as you want.

Hi everyone ..

Chat programs are a tricky subject. I like to think a webserver is best at serving web pages quickly and properly. :) When you get into chatting, those are little pokes at the server over and over. It sort of flows into why we limit POP checks.. and any kind of request to the server really. Requests add up and hinder the major services on the server. But... I think there are quite a few accounts running FlashChat that I have witnessed so far, things seem to be ok with it. I'm guessing they have a small amount of users? I am not familiar with FlashChat and I'm not sure how it works exactly.. but I will check it out now definitely.

Even though we do not allow chat programs, I am very sure there are chats here and there that we do not know about, simply because they actually are running quietly and we are not getting any complaints, nor are we seeing references to them in the logs. You could say that we do allow them, that is until they cause an obvious problem. Each server is different due to the unique accounts residing there, so each server can handle varied processes. We do not actively run crons that search for certain file names and disable them or anything like that. We just handle issues as they appear.

We do have to put that section about chats in our TOS for when we *do* have to suspend an account temporarily due to server overload the chat creates...

As websites become more dynamic, load will always be an issue. We just have to deal problems as they come. Not all sites can stay in a shared environment forever. Some cannot even stay for 2 days. We do actively monitor our servers for slowdowns and narrow down the cause.

We do have many XOOPS users, though I really have to credit it partly to the fact that we use Fantastico (http://www.netenberg.com/fantastico_scripts.php).
It introduces many to XOOPS that may have never known of it, and they begin to love XOOPS.
