The core would then be able to execute a module action without requiring the rendering of blocks or theme. Forwarding actions, ajax calls, rpc, ohhh... I believe it would be a small step for developers and a giant leap for Xoops. Lets Discuss [by redheadedrod] https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=341179 Roadmap::Considerations for roadmap for X2? Lets Discuss
While there have been many good ideas made to add to the X2 Branch some will take major rewriting of the core and others may be better served in the next step. I believe if we are going to plan out a road map we should set goals for the different branch steps. Due to the fact we are trying to update such outdated code I believe we are better served with rapid changes in branch steps with major additions added to each step.

With this in mind I propose something along these lines...

2.6 - Major overhaul of core functions to bring them up to date and to prepare for future updates to the core. We should make some major structural changes to the core in preparation to make the core lighter and more flexible. By this, I think we build an object library system for core and add on libraries. They make use of the autoload feature of PHP5. With the advent of Libraries we then Depreciate the use of frameworks. This is when we add "Plug in" support to the core. Plug ins would be lightweight applications that don't have a user side to them but can be used by admins or are a universal add on that modules can make use of. We would also make changes to the core to support Multi Site and Multi database (PDO). If there is an easy way to make the core better SEO then we do this here as well as clean up the "URL" if possible. We also look at incorporating some sort of CSS/HTML5 framework into the core as well to make templating and theming easier across the board and pull all of the hard coded CSS styles out of the core. Because of the complexity of the changes I think we stop there.

2.7 - This is where we start adding alot of the "features" mentioned in the 2.6 Branch thread. By this time a vast majority of things will have been changed and need to be updated. I think this is also where we start converting some of the core applications to plugins and get them out of the core code. I also think we can start pulling some of the core objects out of the core and place them in the library as well. This branch should focus on making Modules easier and help make the interface the same across the board.

Wed, 21 Sep 2011 17:17:21 +0000 https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=341179 Re: Roadmap and XOOPS 3.0 [by Mamba] https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=318074 Roadmap::Roadmap and XOOPS 3.0
1) DJ is working on new architecture for XOOPS 3.0. At this time it's more of a research project for him, as far as I understand it, and once he is ready, he'll release an Alpha version. Due to his work load, this is not a fast as he would like it.

2) In order to be as good or better than the competition, we all need to get in the game!!! What it means? We have to start contributing - ALL of us who care about XOOPS:

a) We need people to test the beta releases, report bugs, but also try to come up with solutions.

b) if people are not good enough in PHP to contribute code, then the could get involved in writing documentation.

c) if you people don't have the time or skills to contribute to documentation, they can donate money to XOOPS, or offer a bounty for a specific feature, so somebody could do it for XOOPS

The bottom line of a successful Open Source project:

-engaged community where people contribute code, and where this happens in a fast paced way (==> speed of innovation)
- good documentation
- good support
- attractive and easy to use Website

We have a good support here (thanks to Ghia and other volunteers), and we are working on making our Website attractive and easy to use with the new theme developed by Eduardo (BitC3R0).

But we are lacking updated documentation, and the team is non-existent (not much feedback on our recent "Installation Guide" draft)

And we don't have enough developers actively participating in Core development. So if one or two of the key developers are not available (remember - they are doing it in their free time), things are coming to a still stand.

Discussions about future features do happen (like the last one about Smarty), or about ImageManager) but we need to focus on making things happen in the current 2.4.0 release, before we talk about more advanced features.

So my challenge to everybody:

1) please take an existing documentation, and update it (and join the Documentation Team)

2) download the XOOPS 2.4 RC and test, test, test it. And provide bugs and bugs fixes, so we can release it.

Once the XOOPS 2.4 is released, we'll focus on XOOPS 2.5, which will be based on PHP5 only. This will open a lot of different opportunities, incl. merging EXM into it. And it will be a good timing to do the Roadmap.

But we'll need more developers to get involved, who will say: I'm going to develop XYZ for the next release (e.g. new Image Manager, or any other feature from the XOOPS Wishlist, and then deliver on their commitment.

Thu, 15 Oct 2009 17:32:29 +0000 https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=318074 Re: Is there a roadmap for the next XOOPS version?
