Date in local language on server with foreign locale

Some of users hate default date() formats and want to see localised months and weekdays names in XOOPS dates

I'm almost sure, it's impossible now, if server's locale differ from client's locale? It is true?

Thanks, yes... It's same problem... and if it can't be solved in PHP, maybe anybody can write plugin for smarty, which can use two (four) additional arrays with local names - 2 for long names, 4 for short and long, which can be added in global.php for every language-locale?
