Yes, Mambo is doing quite well in that department. They also have Miro corp behind the project investing in corporate use of the system, which (obviously) helps, but they deserve the credit.

So, what do you think we can and should do to make XOOPS as well known and graded as Mambo?

I think at least: have a corporate image + theme. But the awards are for presentation also, how do we get more active in that area, and who will help XOOPS in that way?

But some movements must be done (or at least planned, discussed and assigned) in order to have possibilities to change overall situation. I dont want see XOOPS as CMS for small party of fans, I (with own needs in mind) want to see it as well-known to all (xoopsers and not xooopsers), widely awarded, with publications in online and offline media. Otherwise it is and will be "hard battle" with Mambofils

You have such initiative from me. XOOPS is worldwide used CMS, with ready-to use plans of campain xoopsers can action, but - we must have plans and "ammo"

Image - yes, theme - isn't a problem at all. We have change thinking - now (!) from collected (me...) opinions most corporate's "decision maker man" don't see XOOPS (but Mambo too) as good platform and even starting point.

Let's start a "Marketing" sub-committee that would focus on that. And let's leave the core developers to do what they do best :)

A lot of users of XOOPS are having their own companies, so obviously they know something about Marketing (or at least they think they do ). We would have to define the goals for a Marketing campaign, and then the required means on how to get there (e.g. presentations, target audiences, etc.).

One way would be identify all the journalists who have written about any of the CMS, and then invite them to evaluate XOOPS. Then submit XOOPS to all of the contests for "Best OpenSource software". It seems like that's what Mambo is doing.

And then make an official comparison of features against our competititors to make clear why XOOPS is the "best kept secret".

We just need the people to step up for this. Would you be interested in promoting this idea here? So we can point people to you, if they want to help. Not that you should be the captain of this group (unless you want to?), but as a rally person until we have the manpower?

An "Authorised XOOPS Integrator" label could help to build a more professional image. This label could be used by approved site builders and web design companies using Xoops. I can imagine that some users don't have the time to search the forum and are willing to pay for help.

Publishing a list of the Authorised XOOPS Integrators will also motivate design companies to leave the XOOPS link in the footer.

The corporate look is also an issue. Have a look at the local support sites... they should look alike. The only difference should be the language.

I agree with the opinion that XOOPS can do a lot better on marketing. A marketing team would be well suitable to get things on the road.

Before you think of marketing campains, you should first determine which goals XOOPS would like to achieve. Get some more information on what the average residential website owner thinks of Xoops, and if it is even familiar with this CMS. More important: find out what these people would like to see in a CMS.

That kind of information (and a lot more) will give you a good idea of what the market demands. Combined with an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of XOOPS (the organisation) you can determine which strategy XOOPS should follow.

For example, you could decide to split XOOPS into a business CMS, an intranet CMS and a regular CMS because the market is looking for ready to go CMS software based on its needs.

Based on the strategy you can determine what your marketing campaign should be like to accomplish your goals.

I belief that when the XOOPS organisation can supply what the market demands, the means and possibilities to grow will come along with it

I agree with Martijn. A XOOPS Lite would be a great start. A flatfile cms like Limbo?

Xoops Lite etc - isn't that basically a case of XOOPS + preselected modules?

The trouble is for me is that XOOPS has some excellent modules, but is lacking some fundemental ones.... why? Well essentially due to so many projects and people then deciding to fork off with their own variations....

This isnt always a bad thing, but I think what any official body needs to sit back and think of, before any attempt to bring XOOPS to the masses of public of commerce, is to concentrate their talents on what is lacking... and to try and focus the talents of developers towards those areas ahead of others....

But I may be talking a load of crap here - so please ignore if you think I am

You should see XOOPS lite as publicity for Xoops.

About Xoops: I don't agree that XOOPS misses modules, it misses integrators with the ability to transform the existing modules into practical applications. That's why I suggested this label.
