Many have the misconception that they cannot succeed with a CMS due to fears of needing to be a proficient web programmer. With all the modules and extensions its supports, this is clearly one of the most extensible out of the whole bunch.

I loved the title "The XOOPS CMS Demands Attention" but I was a little disappointed with the content. I actually looked to date it was posted and expected to see 2004 on it.

I was hoping that it will be along the lines: "Yes, XOOPS is great and it's nice to see some positive comments from other people. Of course, we could be better, so let's work on living up to these positive opinions/expectations. Some of the areas for improvement are..."
But some of the actual comments did surprise me.

@xsell: I wasn't intending to get some compliments, but show what is the crux in a voluntary project. There must be people at the RIGHT time having the TIME to answer and KNOWING about the matter. Personally I can't help anyone with OO programming or Javascript. I do know my project AND I had time for help.
@mamba: IF I weren't addicted to XOOPS (wonder what my wife would think about this), I would have been gone a long time ago. About for five years I am spending time on this project. I saw a lot of people come and go, but I stayed loyal. What do I have to tell more? Sometimes I felt uncomfortable and unmotivated with XOOPS, wishing to leave this all behind, but I stayed.
See the facts: XOOPS outer appearance IS ugly, but this will change soon. The code and the functions are old fashioned, some lines of the code are ancient, even with the 2.3-series and the progress is not so fast as most of the people would like to see due to lack of personnel.
Right now there are 111 users online, 9 registered, which is a bit disappointing. More taking than giving I assume. It's a pity! But I give you the promise to stay with XOOPS until one of us is dead.
@xsell again: I try to release an alpha of debaser this month. Which is not feature ready, because more and more ideas come to my mind. But learning to implement these take some time.
Re: The Xoops CMS Demands AttentionI think there's another issue here; XOOPS has been around for many years (was it 2000 when Onokazu released XOOPS 1.0?) so, there's been some high and low points with people coming and going. Should this disappoint the oldies (I guess I could include myself in this category ) and discourage newcomers? Let me point out some very positive developments of late:
-Xoops if having a face lift! This, IMHO, is huge! And I also think the winning design is very good.
-People like trabis, ghia, mamba (just to name a few) are actively supporting the boards and contributing code. A couple of years ago, lets just say we hit a low spot.
-New modules, uniquely designed for XOOPS are appearing. This is a big plus because people are learning how to code in xoops.
Now on a diferent note. we really should be receiving more info regarding xoopshere. Frankblack is right about the code starting to show it's age. There's a lot of deprecated code inside xoops. Since DJ is busy with his new job, why not show us the work he's already done with 3.0? I'm sure experienced coders such as frankblack, trabis, etc could make excellent contributions towards this new version.

Right now writing this post, 84 people? are here, three of them registered. I remember times, when "we" had more "traffic". I guess XOOPS has become less attractive to users.

Why is this so? Ugly appearance? No progress in code? Old fashioned code (true, you never looked at it with a good debugger)? No developers? Maybe a mix.
As a proposal for the boards: maybe a block with unanswered questions or a block with randomly picked unanswered questions would be helpful?
Most extensible? For modules perhaps, but not for modules inside (what I made for tinyeditor was never used anywhere else). Adding additional functionality means hacking the core (I know that trying to add another debugger) and this is not flexible or extensible.
I actually looked to date it was posted and expected to see 2004 on it.
For example, you can choose to install a lite XOOPS instance, which is recommended for smaller personal blogs or journals. Though a more compact version with less features, a lite installation includes a news module that is integrated with the core framework and serves great purpose for such projects.
It's easy to bash and criticize something, and forget its positive sides because it's not 100% what you would like it to be. So actually is nice to see that sometimes other people have something positive about your "child".
Yes, there are many opportunities for improvement in XOOPS, and we need all the help we can get to make it better. But let's not forget that XOOPS has many good sides, because otherwise we wouldn't be here

There is a rock steady code behind XOOPS and it is not because it isn't changed for a while, that it is not good anymore.
It's logical that if you want extend the core itself, that some hacking is needed. The extensible part of XOOPS is its MODULarity. And it is open source, so you can extend anything you want.
We are not MS where thousands are shitting code every day. It is better to have a successful release from time to time, than a lot of small or problem versions. People are not sitting there awaiting for a chance to upgrade their sites. They only wants it to run and stay running.
The golden rule of computing: if it runs, don't touch it!!!
