As indicated year ago (read here), the XOOPS 2.3.x version is the last one version that is supported on PHP4.

Since PHP4 has been discontinued as of August 8th, 2008, and majority of Host providers offer nowadays PHP5, it's time for XOOPS to discontinue support for PHP4 as well.

This will help us to focus our resources on PHP5 development and to take full advantage of PHP5 features, which will benefit our users and developers. It will also help us to shorten our testing cycle.

Therefore, our upcoming XOOPS 2.3.4 will be the last release compatible with PHP4. However, we will make sure that it is a solid release, that will serve our users for many months, if not years, to come, if they need to keep it on PHP4.

XOOPS 2.4 that will follow, will be only tested and certified exclusively on PHP 5.2 and up.

We would also like to encourage everybody to start switching to MySQL 5.x, as pretty soon this will be also our standard supported configuration: PHP5/MySQL5

Oh Realy , i honestly have Mix feeling about this , If you stop supporting Php4 u guys will force us to change hosting , Yahoo for example doese not support php5 and dont seem they will upgrade soon . and i know they other hosting still on php4 ..

with XOOPS after 2.3.4 will only be php5 this mean we will have to move out to new server that support php5 .

Whats wrong with Supporting Both version , i'm sure it not going be hard to make sure all function will work on both versions . i dont want look for new hosting i dont want be limited to php5..

It is a question of resources and time. Unfortunately, we just don't have that much of each. Catzwolf could tell you a recent story about how much time he had to spend to recode something so it would work on PHP4.

PHP 4 was released in 2000, and had a last serious functional update in 2003. Official support for PHP 4 has been discontinued since 2007-12-31. So Yahoo is way behind on that. Maybe if people start switching away from Yahoo, they will finally get the message and will start listen to their customers.

So to be honest, I would recommend to everybody to look for a host which has a good track of updating their platform to newest stable releases. Because you don't want to get stack again in the future.

XOOPS 2.3.4 should be good for a long time for you, so I wouldn't panic. This gives you enough time to either wait for Yahoo to update to PHP5, or to switch to another host.

Thx Mamba .. when u Hear the Name Yahoo you would Think much of that .. But you Wrong they Said that the Majorty of most of the Coustmrs are happy with php4 and there will be no update soon for php5 .and i think i'm fine with php5 but we use some of this old Modules which no longer on active and were build to work with php4 when php5 was not released yet .

Seriously though, those customers who use Yahoo applications might not care. But any customer who uses custom application, will be looking for PHP5. Just search for Yahoo and PHP5 - there are a lot of complaints.

But I understand your desire to stay on PHP4 if you have modules that don't work on PHP5. And I am sure that you can use the upcoming 2.3.4 for a long time...

Care to tell us what they are and where we can download them to look at the code?

Also, many modules coded for PHP4 work fine with PHP5 too.

Well JAVesey i did not use all XOOPS Modules but i can name One I use that not supported 'Debaser" and i guess it popular Module here ..

Hiya,

Ironically, there are many free hosting companies that are not as big as Yahoo, that do support PHP5. I basically think that yahoo is spending a large one and cannot be brothered to take the time to do the upgrade and I honestly think that a company as large as theirs should supply php5 as standards.

Shame on you yahoo.

I created a input filter class for XOOPS and I forgot that XOOPS stills supports php4 and once I had finished someone reminded me of this. I had to go back and basically hack the code to get it to work on php4.

debaser should support PHP5 (I guess), never checked that completely. I am surprised anyway that the module was soooo... hmmm... robust for nearly two years and more than 20000 downloads later. But I am definitely! working on a new version (beta of course). Promised! Otherwise come over here and kick me.

Great News Frankblack..

i dont know if u know that the curent debaser not only has issue with php5 but also i have discovered bug with rating system.when u allow guest to rate files . then a guest rate an file then another guest comes to rate the file gets error that he already rated the file .. i have tried that with two different IP to make sure its not ip problem .

Since somebody asked: XOOPS 2.4.0 is the LAST release tested on PHP4.

We've changed the numbering of planned versions:

Our planned XOOPS 2.3.4 became the current XOOPS 2.4.0, and the planned 2.4 will become XOOPS 2.5.

Starting with XOOPS 2.5, all XOOPS versions will be tested and certified exclusively on PHP5.2 and up.
