A simple weather module with a weather block, module page and options to choose from multiple cities and Fahrenheit or Celsius. This module is English only at this point in time.

Features:

- XOOPS group permissions integration
- Weather Block
- Choose between Fahrenheit or Celsius
- Give users choice of several cities to view
- Several config settings in preferences

Great Module.
Once I worked out how to get the codes for none US locations it is very easy to use.

Examples:
Monterey Mexico is MXNL0068 which is derived from the yahoo url =http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/MXNL0068.html

Perth, Australia is ASXX0089
http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/ASXX0089.html.

To find your location browse the weather.yahoo site and get the code from the url...

Weather block doesn't look great on my site due to the CSS but you can turn the background color and border on or off via the mod preferences....

Hi ,
That's a very nice module !
But is it possible to translate it ? the actual language file only support some few changes, it will be much better if we can also translate the days, (today, tomorow, sun, mon, ...)
and thoses ones :
Feels Like:
Barometer:
Humidity:
Visibility:
Dewpoint:
Wind:
Sunrise:
Sunset:

Etc ...

Ahh yes... permissions in 2.0 series... should be able to view demo now...

As far as language... this mod is merely doing content fetching and parsing... there isn't really an option to change the language without paramount amounts of work.... which I am unable to do at this point in time..

It's a great start for a badly-needed module !!!

A quick and "dirty" hack for replacing lang @ the block level is to edit /modules/weather/templates/blocks/weather_block.php and add this after line 32 ( right after substr(eregi_replace('<BR /><BR />',"",$lines[31]), -5); )

YOUR-LANG-staff should be replaced with your lang replacements... I'm still looking for the full list of Yahoo's vars to replace ... but don't have the time for it ... so who need the block badly can folow this and make his own hack or even start helping with turning the module into multilang .... with dpfresh permition of cours

I mostely needed the weather block, so I use this dirty hack in a rush ..... but ....

The main page translation is more difficult ... I still couldn't do a hack ... maybe dpfresh will light my(our) eyes ...

Looks great.

In my block though, currently the weather is "FAIR" but in my block is says "Fai"

Is there a reason why it's truncating the results?

Any idea how to fix this?

tested on XOOPS 2.013 and found a bug , dont know if only to this version or will apply to someone else with different versions of xoops.

After you click MAKE DEFAULT to any city.. the other modules left icons will dissapear... poof!!

after that, if you click on your Control panel link (http://www.yourdomain.com/admin.php ) it will ask you another buggy thing

"This is your first time to enter the administration section. Press the button below to proceed."

after you hit SUBMIT you get everything back, but still weird to me.. never see that with any other module.

beside that... everything is perfect, simple module but do directly what we needs.

I have notice the same thing about the "First Time entering the Admin" I am running 2.0.15. Untill now I thought I was just going bonkers, again.

I am not sure about the icons, I haven't paid close enough attention. But definately strange to get that "First Time Entering Admin" message.

This looks like a really cool module, but can you specify which XOOPS version you have developed it on/for?. If you have 2.2+ this is unlikely to work properly on 2.0.* and you'll just get loads of complaints.

Hi all.. so I used a 2.4 install to develop this module and it has worked fine on that.... I recently upgraded to 2.0.15 at picharddesign.com and had a similar weird thing going on with the "First Time entering the Admin" message... I will try to dig around some time and see what is going on there...

So at this point I would call it a 2.4 module....

The set up: The block fetches and parses an RSS feed where as the module itself fetches data from yahoo weather... thus you may have slightly different temps for the block and the module - also depending on how you set your cache time for each....

The easiest way to make this happen was to return the results of the data fetch as an array and loop through it to find specific tags... so... Hopefully yahoo won't change their format for a long time... else chaos and mayhem may ensue...

I'm not opposed to opening this project up to the XOOPS community if someone wants to take the ball and run with it.... I just don't have time to do language packs and what not... many more mods to build..... Although I think language files will be particularly cumbersome with this type of fetching set up....

Sugestion...the block will be more useful if it'll include and the name of the city displayed...but one can always edit the template file to include that

The block does say the name of the city - by default it is "Sitka Weather" when you first install it... per the install instructions, change it to whatever your default city is....

I ment the name of the block itself + the name of the default city under it , but it's logical and the way it is (one doesn't needs an expert to tell you that's a weather block)

That makes sense... I set it up so it would blast everything in the cache directory whenever the end user selects a new city or the admin chooses a new default city.... Obviously, it only needs to get rid of the cache files for the weather mod but I couldn't find a better way to do that at this point...

The reason for this was so you wouldn't see old data after changing the city due to the XOOPS cache.... This wasn't a problem in 2.4

For some reason in my BLOCK, I get the following:

When it's cloudy, mine says "Cloud"

When it's fair, mine says "Fai"

When I install this module on my local server - it works great. When I installed it to a hosting site (www.110mb.com) for a client, the module loads but does not display ANY information about ANY weather conditions, it does retrieve the list of cities from the database. No errors are given, it just displays the banner and the choice of cities. Also, when I use the small block on the left, it's the same thing, doesn't display anything. I love this module - but how can I get it to work on a remote server?

Tried the 1.2 version on XOOPS 2.0.13.2. It all works nicely except the 'This is your first time in admin' message still appears and I too get the above mentioned 'Fai' problem when using centigrade in the block. The block issue is a minor niggle, but it would be nice if the admin message prob could be sorted.

My host provider turned

allow_url_fopen

to OFF (before it was ON in PHP4).

Now I am get the following errors:

Warning [PHP]: file(): URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in file modules/weather/blocks/weather_block.php line 29

Warning [PHP]: file(http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecastrss?p=USAL0054&u=f): failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found in file modules/weather/blocks/weather_block.php line 29

The offending line 29 is:

$lines = file ($url);

How can we rewrite it to something that doesn't require allow_url_fopen to be ON.

Only the block is working for 2days now, on module's page it shows just the "change city" menu and switch between C & F degrees , can anyone else confirm this?

DefianceB0y is correct. The xml feed that the main index is using is no longer valid. It was attempting to use:
http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecast/<citycode>_<f/c>.html

Apparently yahoo changed their xml feed location.

Hi all... sorry it's taken a while to post this update..

OK... so this release should make this module completely compatible with XOOPS 2.xx etc....

Fixes:
1) yahoo recently changed their format causing the index page in the module come up empty, this has been fixed
2) The weather block would sometimes have the letters of the forecast "Fair", "Windy", etc chopped off - this has been fixed
3) The previous version would blast everything in the cache directory when the end user selected a different city or the admin changed the default city.... shouldn't be a problem any more... just don't set a cache for this module or the weather block and changes to the default city should display immediately...

But as for hacking the lang for the block the hack is like this (I still think how to make it work with lang files ...

I just tried this as it looks to be just what I need. Trouble is that to module took ages to display the index page and when it did (after aquite a few minutes) the index page was blank except for the drop-down box with the cities list and the "F / C" toggle.

Yahoo displays the weather for my location just fine, so it's probably something in my set-up.

Any tips as to what the problem might be?

My problem sorted, and it was absolutely nothing to do with the module

The hosting company, by default, doesn't allow php files and other scripts to call other webpages. This is blocked at the firewall.

However, if one requests permission.......

For weather locations that you must pick a "nearby" town when the exact location is not in the Yahoo! weather site, how would you edit the code to pull the city name (for all locations to make this easier) from the "Name (City, State):" field in the database instead? This would be EXTREMELY helpful for getting more remote locations represented. Thanks...
