XOOPS: Promo campaign for XOOPS

Within a few weeks we would like to start a promotional campaign to spread the word of XOOPS!

We are looking for people who would like to help us with this campaign. Mostly we need ideas on how to spread the word of XOOPS in an effective, low cost, and fun way. Around the same time XOOPS will have a new logo, which we will be able to use in our campaign.

If you would like to help, please contact me or post your ideas in the comments.

Probably a silly idea, but why not consider using the cafepress module as one means of promotion, especially since XOOPS is getting a new logo. It will fulfill one requirement: low cost. And at least one product should be displayed in a block on the site for people to see. It will also be a way to show off the versatility of XOOPS and add a splash of color to the site.

Not a bad idea at all, Cafepress is one of the 'media' that can be used. Herko suggested to hold a design contest for merchandising goods even, so we can add a lot of new products to the store.

By using the cafepress module I assume you mean to use it on xoops.org and affiliated sites (like support sites)?

Here's another thought/question. I, like many other XOOPS users have removed the XOOPS banners from my banner rotation, though many users have kept theirs up. So......

1. How can I get replacement banners?
2. Since you mentioned that a new logo is going to be designed, are there new logos being planned?

Ok, it seems that you are finally on the right track, although this had to be done months ago, when I posted my ideas about XOOPS Promotion, so what I think is that we should follow what I just said three months ago. We should creat banners, screen savers, psp BAckground images, firefox themes, and also make a new logo to be placed on every XOOPS Powered website!

Quite a while ago I put together a Planet like XOOPS rss aggregator, but it was never officially launched. You can see it at:
http://feeds.xoops.org/

The page needs a proper logo and an "About" page to describe what feeds can be added and how. Also, we should revise the existing feeds and see if anything should be added or removed. One missing piece is a feed for the dev site news.

I think we should finalize this.

1. Sponsor gaming sites. Build the site using Xoops. Lots of users and high traffic. Matter of fact I was just ask today by an individual if I knew of people willing to sponsor.

2. One of my host (bluehost.com) uses Fantastico to install CMS. XOOPS is in the mix and at the bottom of the pile. Perhaps there is a way to brand better.

What about using something like spreadfirefox.com. And giving a small prize on monthly basis who redirects more users. Like placing the link of the site on Xoops.org under XOOPS Promoter ???

I cant think of another idea at the moment.

my suggestion is: to try to convince computer magazines(best with CD in any insue) to make a review of XOOPS.
Sugestion to make a comparative articles between CMS.

The local support make a review or Press-Release to any magazine in your country

Other idea is the "great power" of RSS. Make XOOPS news in many sites or directory of RSS sites.

Now I'm not saying place an advert in NY Times but if XOOPS had a second donation module running allowing people to donate maybe $5 or whatever, XOOPS raise some cash and look at taking out adverts with someone like Trade Doubler and of course Google Adsense.

Also I noticed a thread the other day regarding FOSDEM, the thread was discussing wether or not to have a seperate room or be apart of FOSDEM - XOOPS needs to be apart of things like FOSDEM, a presentation, examples of the BEST XOOPS based sites. (Perhaps examples of sites using LDAP etc)

Lets expand on the XSAS thing: Create .ISO's with full install scripts that can be distributed to magazines.

Last time I looked XSAS was aimed just at Windows, why not a Linux one?

Maybe we could look at taking a relativley simple Ubuntu system and including a fully working XOOPS system as part of the install <- maybe thats too much...

Just a couple of nutty suggestions.

I'm making a cd-rom (french cdrom for this start project).
Herko knows this project...
Objectif : give the very best of compilation of XOOPS (doc, modules, themes, kernel, demo sites and open source application) for a webmaster (beginner or not) as if he was on a desert island.

Ressource on this cd will be available and accessible directly on ms windows, mac and linux system (html page). Olny the demo sites are for windows system.

The project is about 75-80%...
At the begin of december, I hope...

I think that the cdrom will be send to famous computer magazines for example...and different ways to use it....

I think maybe also having a concerted effort to release press releases for significant events (new releases, changes within the community, etc.) are a good way of getting the brand into the mainstream media (at least the web portion) and getting the name into the average person's lexicon.

when you have decided in which way it is better to promote XOOPS I can dedicate a big space on www.xoopsit.net in order to spread the initiative

First Extend the SCOPE of XOOPS pls!

Make XOOPS a blogging friendly platform and its popularity will skyrocket.

Presently, XOOPS is positioned as a portal software/community building CMS. It should evolve to provide standard Blogging features too. This will help it reach the next huge potential userbase.

Already XOOPS does have the core features necessary for Blogging, (the News module is adequete), but added support like quick unregistered visitor commenting with CAPTCHA authentication, pingback, trackback support will go a long way in making XOOPS attractive to the blogging crowd. XOOPS can be a fantastic blog platform. Just tweak and give it these features please.

Once done, it can be promoted as a ALL ROUNDER platform for applications ranging from portals to sophisticated Blogs.

My 2 cents.

Xoops indeed is a brilliant platform. However, after people hear about it, they need to be able to use it very easyly - and unfortunately - this isn't the current case. There's a large learning curve for people, and that intimidates them.

I have introduced XOOPS to art and design students on many occasions. The reaction was always that of seeing the potential - but exasibation about the learning curve.

Practical suggestions:

* A visual widget to tweak themes.

* A visual widget that downloads and installs themes and modules from the admin area.

* A better RSS integration. (This will also help spread the XOOPS word..)

* A shift from simply cms perception to a PHPOS perception potentiality.. (This will also help in possitioning the XOOPS apart not just in behaviour but in functionality and trajectory..)

Another 1 penny.. ;)

Can you explain a bit more what you mean with the change in perception to PHP OS? Do you mean more like the way as explained in the xooSphere Roadmap?

Mostly what we need to focus on right now for a promotional campaign is what we have already. So ideas like promoting XOOPS on the NY times frontpage are very beneficial for this project, even if it proves that we will have to find an alternative medium because of our limited budget

So what to sum up what we have so far:
- Newspaper ads
- Paid website promotion
- Send articles and demo CD's to magazines, both offline and online
- Maintain media contacts
- Develop and sell merchandise articles

Paid promotion is necessary a good target public..

Which our objective public? target public.. webmasters? noobs in html looking for a easy website? bloggers? enterprise user? php nerds?

We will have conditions to support and to give a good support the wave of new users? We will have good manual/how-to in XOOPS 2.2.3 ?

It will be better to spend efforts in a guerrilla marketing,... no much money, but more effort.

Is possible make a press-release to global distribution by local suport sites? or better any local suport make your PR and send to aproval by marketing team?

Many ideas, many questions...

Yes.. I was thinking about the roadmap.. But as I understood it, the roadmap anticipates developers to create modules which will come within the XOOPS frame work.
However, that depends on people developing modules, and/or adapting existing applications (e.g. wordpress, zen-cart), to work on xoops. Therefore, you get bugs in such approach which confront users with:
a. technical uphill.
b. question of whether or not to use xoops.

In the context of making XOOPS more popular, surely such considerations should be kept to minimal.
I think that to achieve that, the system should be much more like an OS that will:
a. enable simple installations of PHP, or even other programming languages, which are avaliable, are used, and are bearing less bugs..
b. as an OS, XOOPS can provide a few basic functionalities that are part of it, and make users see sense in using it. Therefore, XOOPS can be more than just a frame work for building various kinds of websites, it can be, for example, the tool you want to use to browse google from.. etc..

On sourceforge there's a tool called eyeOS, which kind of goes towards this direction.. But I think xoops, with a view of the xoopsphere development, is far better situated to provide a viable delivery of such an OS..

We could very easy spread the word of XOOPS by making seminars and give away cd's with XOOPS and many modules documents etc in all (international) universities especially in Information Technology.

Mambo has organized a seminar here in Greece in our School and perhaps in other too.

We are loosing our "customers".

Target audience is very simple :

Webmasters to use it
the community gains profits by the support of installing and customizing

Hosting Companies to install it
are more popular and gain a "plus" from the community

Students - phpnerds to develop it
can profit from it and will help the community to make it better

So you see we have to make different packages for each target audience

What are the benefits of XOOPS and not the characteristics ?

Ease of use (don't spend much time to learn it)
High customizable (you have your individual site/community without your customers/visitors know that it is a known cms)
Fits in every situation (even if you need to show arabic or cyrillic characters)
International Support (you don't have to know english to install it)
Very secure (the security holes are few you can sleep the nights)
User friedly (user can understand it right away / dont get lost)

with all those benefits we can "sell" XOOPS very easy

i cannot think more now...

Spreading XOOPS by giving out CD's to universities is a good idea indeed. We would need to train the trainer for so to speak. If we can find supporting professors who like the idea, they can add this one to their yearly curriculum .

@aharon,
Good point, perhaps useful for the core developers and strategy. Further development of the preconfigured packages would be a gain for XOOPS in my opinion as well.

I think this could be done with Fantastico auto installer. Many host are already using Fantastico. The charm of this auto installer is that it's one button click. That appeals to a lot of people who are just starting a website.

This is an example of what Bluehost uses Fantastico to auto install. XOOPS appears only under one category since it's listed as a CMS. With the community pack idea, a targeted theme and lots of dummy content to help could allow XOOPS to appear in many categories, NO? That would make using and spreading XOOPS very easy.

Notice XOOPS is last in line in the CMS listing. I'm not sure someone will get that far down the list to try, but if XOOPS did appear in multiple categories that might catch some attention.

Just a thought to add to the pile.

Would it be useful to make an RPM package of XOOPS available for easier install on Redhat systems?

I've done this in the past and could create the RPM, but won't bother unless it's of interest to others.

Also There Should Be A Demo Or. ScreenShots Of Different Things. Maybe Not Video Of Stuff. Since Some People Might Have Dial Up And The Whole Discussion Of What Format To Put It In.

First of all thank you all for the very helpfull responses and ideas so far. "Behind the scenes" preparations are in progress and I expect some news on this pretty soon.

Also the marketing & communications team still could use some more people who would like to help in getting XOOPS to the next level.

Is there any info about what's going on with this project? Haven't heard anything in quite a spell. The deafening silence kind of gives weight to silvrhand's question, "Is XOOPS Dying?"

From a marketing point of view I can tell you that XOOPS needs to be renewed. The way in which xoops.org is structured as well as the site theme should be redone. Starting off with a new logo is a first step, after which the rest of the changes and promotional activities will follow.

Would it be a bad idea to upload XOOPS to the various techie sites that offer downloads? Adding XOOPS to a download site is a way to get more exposure don't you think?

Just wondering since I often find download sites that offer lot's of software across a varity of categorys cms included, but not Xoops.
