The designers at AutoThemes.com recently feel in love with Xoops and decided its time to develop for the Xoops community.

Introducing GoXoops.com, the newest member of our family of web design sites.

We've released 38 new themes for Xoops. The majority of this first group are focused on online gaming clans for WOW, Battlefield 2, Everquest and the like. In the coming weeks, we'll be converting almost 500 themes to Xoops!

Give us a try - we promise you won't be disappointed.

Good for you, I suppose. I'm always a little bit flummoxed when I see the developers slaving away with virtually no thanks for free, then somebody comes along and wants to charge for a few hours of graphics work.

I hope you guys donate 50% to Xoops.

IMO, for-pay themes for open source software just sucks.

But good luck, nonetheless.

Okay, I just can't take it.

Is it just me, or should their post be deleted? Good for them if they can market their for-pay stuff independently, but is it appropriate to post it on this site? Are they adding to the community by doing this?

Maybe they're giving away free themes, but I didn't see any. If so, please accept my humble apologies.

If you take a look athttp://www.goxoops.com/web_free.php, you'll see that they do give away a significant amount of themes. Unfortunately, not one is compatible with XOOPS. I hope they decide to port their AutoTheme module to XOOPS so that we can benefit from these great themes.

As far as deleting their announcement goes... They are not the first non-XOOPS site to post about services for the XOOPS community and I suspect they won't be the last. While I personally do not agree with non-XOOPS sites posting their commercial products on XOOPS.org, I've yet to see a news article deleted because of it.

Like it or not, their announcement is relavent because they are posting about XOOPS themes, paid or not.

I do believe the XOOPS community has room for those who can make an honest living on commercial themes, original or ported. Remember we already have individuals that make some money selling their work. I say good for them. Even better if you love your work and can get paid for it!

What's wrong with people providing commercial services to people who use XOOPS? Why should all XOOPSers be dependant on free everything at all? Commercial services can bring a more focussed quality to designs, plus it makes using XOOPS as the basis for your websites more interesting because you can di business with it.

One thing I don't really like is that people tend to forget about the 'free'dom part of open-source rather easily, but focus on the 'free' as in gratis part. XOOPS is not freeware, XOOPS is libre open source. The free part means you're free do do with the code what you want, and you have to grant others that same right. That is the whole basis on which pen source is founded, not the fact that everyone can get it free of charge. This is so fundamentally important, that we actually encourage people to start commercial services around XOOPS.
If you want to pimp your car, do you go to the garage and sk if someone is willing to make the modification for free? Not likely. People put their time and energy and more importantly, their creativity into XOOPS, some of the added value *services* can be easily paid for. Mind you, that's for services, not code itself.

I agree with you Herko.

People tend to think since XOOPS is free all things touching XOOPS should be free too! So if a person starts selling his work does that hurt the community? I believe it only does if an individual forgets to donate quality work on a regular basis back into the community.

I wouldn't mind seeing a paid subscription service if it would benifit Xoops. Lets say $12 a year and subscribers get access to products or areas normally not open to the community. Money from this would fund further developement of Xoops.

I agree with Herko and anyone else that agrees with him. Just because the source code it open source it does not mean EVERYTHING has to be FREE.

Since you can't copyright content or the source for anything to do with XOOPS i feel that is enough for free stuff. They give you the basics and what you do with it is up to you.

I don't use a lot of the FREE themes here because they don't suit my taste. I have posted a lot about hiring people for themes on XOOPS.org but no one ever takes me up on the offer. I have even gone to other coding sites that offer a bid process. Most people dont know what XOOPS is and will bid on three times the price only to say that they cant complete it or dont understand it.

I feel this is well worth the money and I will be buying a few themes from them. Might even hire them to do a few themes that are custom to only me.

I think you all need to ask what have you given to XOOPS for free from your hard earned time or money besides advice?

When I released xroster there was a HUGE debate on if I can charge for it or not. I finally gave in to publicly post it for free and just take donations. I was promised by about 8 different people that they would donate and not ONE of them did donate anything. Yet they all still use it to this day.

As for me I support anyone making money off themes for sure because an image can be copyrighted where your source code can't be if you use XOOPS!

Come on guys quit hating and congratulating them for helping the people that have asked for it! God knows it going to save me a TON of time.

They do have this it is by donation, look at my title "Friend Of XOOPS" means I have donated to XOOP for the future programming. I try to donate even 5 USD a month just so everyone can continue to use XOOPS for FREE!

I am sure there are a lot of us that feel we should get special access if we donate, build a free module, do something that has quality to keep XOOPS going but I don't think that is what XOOPS is all about. It about a bunch of people coming together and producing a quality CMS for the public to use.

Too bad it has turned into more about GIVE ME FREE advice, support, themes, modules, your heart and soul so my website stays online looking great and I can take all the credit.

Sorry this is getting long I better go now or I could go on forever, just hit a nerve when someone said GIVE ME MORE FREE!

To the topic at hand. GoXoops will add some nice commercial themes to Xoops. The gamers themes in particular have been ask for by a few individuals.

Recently Snow launched a very promising looking commercial themes site.

We also have new themes released almost weekly. Look at the cool work coming from our friends at TurkXoops, and James has also received the modded default theme from his site.

There is plenty of room for both. I imagine however with the quality of free themes popping up commercial sites will be hard pressed on generic themes, but should do well with custom work.

Best of luck to any who can get paid for doing what they enjoy doing.

I went to TurkXoops and I like his work but cant read his site. No translation to english. I guess my loss.

I think everyones point on the matter was that too many people complaining when something is NOT free. Esp when it is something they want for their site. They just too cheap to buy it so they complain about it.

That's why i use both malay+english translation in Xoops Malaysia.

Wow. I sure didn't mean to spark a big fight with the introduction of a few themes!

I appreciate everyone's comments in this thread and I assure you all that I meant no offense. If we should title future news postings "Commercial" or something like that, then we'd be happy to comply with accepted community standards.

On to a more interesting topic - Why did we start making XOOPS themes? The simple answer is that folks from your community were asking for them. We gear our development activities towards demand. The neat thing is that once we installed XOOPS we really really liked it. I personally like the theme development system. We develop alot for Xanthia (Postnuke) and the like, and frankly, I think the bloated theme engines are getting way out of control. Its beyond me why a Xanthia theme needs 25 to 40 files to do exactly what XOOPS does in under 10. XOOPS is simple and easy to theme with a nice smarty templating system for complex work.

Someone asked about free XOOPS themes. We hope to do some of those. We offer over 250 free AutoThemes. It would be nice to port the 50 or so best. We'll give it some thought.

As for the future of our little XOOPS excursion, we hope to convert our entire catalog to Xoops. It will really depend on sales.

I hope to try and become a regular around here - from what I've seen of this community its friendly, professional and going places.

Great themes, I'll be buying one for my gaming website. It doesn't bother me at all to pay for professional work. I've tried to do my own, but this is such a reasonable cost, I'll take it! It's inspiring to see the creativity. I'm still gonna learn how to do my own theme eventually, this helps me see the possibilities.

BTW, I assume your themes are compatible with the new upgrades. Do they include a "new" message code for private messages? That's a feature I'm looking for.

So, quality themes and modules are just suppose to make themeselves, and be free as in beer. Hmm...

There are tons of great theme and modules that are free as in gratis, but there are times when it is prudent to hire someone to do custom coding to suite your particular needs.

Okay, I think I've been educated, here. If developers are down with it, I sure as H E double hockey sticks can't say anything more.

I posted my reply fresh after the brouhaha surrounding the release of 2.2.3 and reading a lot of negative messages. At the time I was thinking, "oh nice! Here the development team is getting raked over the coals and now these guys are asking for money for slapping some graphics together."

But again, I have been educated. I think I owe GoXoops.com an apology. I'm sorry to have gotten my education at your expense.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I'm going to go put my money where my mouth is and donate.

OK, So I did purchase a theme from here but I have a huge issue when people want to enter the world of sales but not follow standard customer service. The theme I purchased, and maybe all of them, do not work with the CBB Forums which is what XOOPS is recommending with the latest version of Xoops, or at least that is all the forums they offer in their pre-made module pack downloads.

I contacted the theme makers and told them that there was an issue and if they could fix it that would be great or let me exchange the theme for one that works with the forum, and if that was not possible I would want a refund.

The answer is "sorry I am at a loss", not a good answer. So I had to downgrade my forums to the VERY old forums and lost all my forum content, now back at step one again.

I do not think that it will be made public by AutoThemes.com so I will do it...These themes will not work with CBB forums, only the original forums that come with the 2.0.13 version of XOOPS so if you plan on taking XOOPS on its growth then there is chance these themes will not grow with you and don't ask for a refund or repair because it is like no one hears you.

Very talented designers, poor cutomer service...this all equals low level success and it is sad to see, because again they do have some nice designs.

well to be fair indear, you are new to xoops, warrick is also new.

the information is available in the faq and it's a 1 second job to fix like LB says..

you could have asked or even searched..

also warrick could have too to be fair to you on your side.. but it seems like he wasn't aware till you reported it so he didnt know it was needed..

but i'm pretty sure he knows now and the module header will be added to their XOOPS themes in future..

a lesson learned for both sides parties :)
