Modules: News 1.2 RC2 Released

News 1.2 Release Candidate 2 has been released fixing a few bugs - see changelog. This is a public beta for testing purposes, but if no bugs are found, it will become the stable release.

We still have problems with some sites not showing news in Classic view. Unfortunately, we have not succeeded in locating the problem, since it is only a few people with the problem and scarce debugging information.

You can get the file at the XOOPS Module Development Forge's News module project pages. Please report any bugs on the project bug tracker before june 7th 2004.

Here is the trick on the classic view no show. It is for someone else to figure out why but here is a fix. Simply delete /templates_c/db%3Anews_index.html then call the news module. It is replaced with a fully functional template.

Even though the the topics view worked the template file still showed an old generation date and the classic was properly executed with columns but a topic pulldown only - no stories.

I hope it helps that we did not have this on a 2.0.6 fresh install, only on the 2.0.3 that came up through 2.0.3 - 2.0.5 patch then 2.0.5 - 2.0.6 patch.

Yes, spotlight did work with it when I tested it a few minutes ago.

Thanks for spotting this little fix. *shakes head* Sometimes it's the smallest little thing that makes the biggest difference.

There are a few other things, like permissions not saving, or it appears that way. On first run of the perms, I got a blank page, but on goin gback and setting different perms (all view I think) the everything was fine afterwards. Nothing gets displayed beofre the View Perms linst after hitting submit (It's in the bug tracker I think)Anyway...

This module is almost ready in my opinion, but users not comfortable with updating through phpmyadmin, or editing tables, or not wanting to troubleshoot small problems here and there are recommended to hold off until the bugs have been fully eliminated.

If your like me and want to get your hands a little dirty, you can get this module up and running in a few minutes time. It really looks nice so far.

Since I don't have a test site, I had to revert back to the orignal files and database tables, looking forward to final release for sure

One request for a RC3: use the Spaw editor. That one works so much nicer than the standard XOOPS editor. You could make it optional so that people who don't like Spaw can use the old XOOPS editor.

I am not going to do anything about Spaw. As I said in the RC1 comments, we are waiting for the completion of a cross-browser WYSIWYG editor, which will be placed in the core.

The group permissions NEED the typo in modules/system/admin/groupperm.php line 21 FIXED! Maybe I should just add a fixed groupperm.php file to the package? And an upgrade script to make the new table.

The final release will also include a fix for the toggle of whether topic images should be displayed or not. Currently they are always displayed, but I have the fix.

Hi...

I reinstalled, updated, added new tables, deleted the file in (Templates_c) added all the permissions, and I dont get a classic news.

I get a drop down menu for topics and the pages numbers to click though, when I click through the pages I get the same screen. A drop down, and the page numbers. I have news set as start module.

Second, topics displays (all) topics cutting off the bottom of my theme. I have about 20 topics. I use (imago2). Maybe theme problem? Every other module I have installed have worked.

I reinstalled my web backup and updated the module and the old news is back and displaying perfect.
hmmmm?

What debug info would you guys like. PHP? SQL/BLOCK? SMARTY? What info in those debugs do you want.

from the screen with no news, Smarty debug would be good - in order to see if the $columns variable is filled with values. If it is, then PHP debug in order to see, whether there are any errors.

I just tried updating the module on a site, I have access to, which had the problem. After the module update, it doesn't have the problem anymore.

I don't know if a module update helps when the no-news screen shows - even if there are no changes, just try to update the module and see if it corrects it. If it does, then I'll have to look into the templates setup, methinks.

When I used previous beta version, I also encountered this 'no showing' problem. However, when I completely deleted old version templates and updated new templates. It's okay now. The problem may lie in the templates database.

Hi

I have it working now, classic is displaying.

I deleted all (NEWS templates) from within the template manager and then I updated the module.

Then I regenerated the (NEWS Templates) from the template manager and now its working...

Can you add a feature so I can pick which topics I want on home page when using topic method of display.

Zanmich, your solution worked for me. Fought with this for a couple of hours. But, it did the trick. For a while, the news articles weren't even showing up in the topic view.

I'm grateful for your answer.
